Puma sighting in the Saalekreis: cat or real predator?

An exciting animal spectacle is currently causing a stir in the Saalekreis district in Saxony-Anhalt. Authorities are on alert following a sighting of a suspected big cat that may be a cougar. This sighting, which was observed on a beautiful day at Geiseltalsee, has already been extensively investigated by the police and regulatory authorities. Inforadio reports that a helicopter was used to search for the animal from the air, but the costs for this operation are not yet known.

The head of the Saale district's public order department estimated the probability that it was actually a puma at 80 percent. The video, which was recorded by an employee of the district office, suggested to the experts that a larger animal could be on the hunt. This assessment was described as “credible”, as the Saalekreis speaker, Sabine Faulstich, explained. On Monday, the authorities alerted the population via the NINA emergency app and strongly advised them not to approach the animal and to keep dogs on a leash.

A shadow play in the Saale district

The district, with its eyes and ears open, has already used drones to search the area for the animal. On Tuesday, three teams searched the area with drones, but the search was scaled back due to new findings. Experts admitted that the animal could also be smaller than initially thought. This reassurance brought some relief to the worried population. At the same time, the authorities plan to install wildlife cameras and consult veterinarians to find out what species the animal really is. ORF clarifies that the sightings were reported on June 13th and 16th.

Memories come back to Kleinmachnow's lion hunt two years ago, which turned out to be a misunderstanding. The current situation is a similar reminder, as the excitement surrounding supposed big cats has also been an issue in the past, such as in Great Britain, where many of these sightings turned out to be hoaxes. WA reports that in recent days there has also been an incident in the local area with a calf being killed, the carcass of which is currently being examined to determine whether a big cat was involved.

Meanwhile, the district office points out that there is no evidence of missing big cats from zoos or circuses and that keeping the animal may be illegal. The Halle Mountain Zoo has already given its consent to take in the big cat if it is caught. PETA has also spoken out and is calling for a ban on the keeping of exotic animals by private individuals. They have also offered a reward for information about the animal's owner.

The situation remains exciting – tension is in the air. The public is still urged to be vigilant and keep up to date with the latest information. The alleged cougar's case continues to be closely monitored and all eyes are on the next developments.
