Divorces in Germany 2024: Statistics and surprising trends!

More and more couples are calling it quits

In Germany the divorce rate remains at an interesting level. According to a recent report by TRT More than 129,000 marriages ended in divorce in 2024, an increase of 0.3 percent or about 329 divorces compared to the previous year. What is particularly notable is that 2023 marked a low point in divorces - the lowest level since reunification.

The trend that the number of divorces has largely declined since 2003 remains, although there are still couples who are divorcing. Almost 51 percent of divorced couples had underage children, which means they are affected far more often than those suspected. While there were over 65,600 divorces involving children in 2023, the number will increase in 2024 Statista A total of 111,000 minors who have to experience the consequences of their parents' separation.

The reasons why couples separate are wide-ranging: growing apart, new partners, and even minor arguments can lead to a final end. However, many couples hesitate to make a decision due to financial uncertainties and concerns about children. This is highlighted in a report by Smart maintenance, which also looks at the number of separations in non-marital partnerships. This is around 5.7 percent per year, which affects around 80,000 children.

Statistics and separation times

The average length of marriage before divorce occurs is 14 years and 8 months. Surprisingly, 16.4 percent of couples made the decision to divorce in the year of their silver wedding anniversary or even later. This shows that the step towards separation is often considered for a long time.

A look at the separation period: 80.5 percent of divorces occurred after a separation period of just one year. In 18.5 percent, the separation even lasted three years or longer. It is therefore not surprising that statistics also show how marriages develop over time. The most common lengths of marriage until divorce are as follows:

Duration of marriage (in years) percentage.percentage
0-2 2.7%
3-5 15.3%
6-9 23.1%
10-14 21.4%
15-19 15.8%
20-25 11.2%
over 25 10.5%

The high divorce rates in cities such as Berlin (42.5%) and Hamburg (40.2%), in contrast to Saxony (29.8%) and Bavaria (31.4%), highlight regional differences and the social trends that influence divorce.

Life after the breakup

Another important aspect is the financial situation after the separation. Around 38.2 percent of single parents are considered to be at risk of poverty, with average household income falling by 24.3 percent after a separation. Women are particularly affected, often struggling with a decline of 29.7 percent. Five years after the separation, 68 percent of men and 47 percent of women have returned to their previous income level.

The legal implications of divorce are also complex. Joint custody is awarded in 95.7 percent of cases. The risk of poverty is a serious issue that not only affects the financial consequences of a divorce, but also has an impact on children, who ideally should grow up in a harmonious environment.

Overall, it can be seen that despite the declining number of divorces, a stable number of affected children remains and the social challenges associated with separations are still very present.
