Summer theater in Halle: Antarctica '89” takes you into a bygone world!

An exciting theater project is coming up in the heart of Halle (Saale) that brings together several strands of history. The Cultural shipping company is hosting a summer theater from June to September 2025 based on the true story of the GDR's third and final Antarctic expedition, which took place in 1989. With the title “Antarctica ’89 – Last Summer GDR”, the play tells of twelve men who set off into the cold of the eternal ice and only returned after almost three years – to a world that they did not recognize.

The performances begin on Friday, August 14, 2025, in the cozy courtyard of the Ulrichskirche and will take place on a total of six dates. The audience can look forward to a successful combination of theater and music, as the band Die drei Establishen will accompany the piece with live music. The Kulturreederei association has set itself the goal of offering visitors not only an entertaining but also a thoughtful atmosphere.

World in transition

What happened to the men who once had to travel to Antarctica? When they returned after many years, their homeland was no longer the same. The country they came from no longer existed. They only received fragments of information about the exciting but often explosive developments in the GDR via radio. The contact with a FRG women's team in Antarctica offered them an unexpected exchange that plays a central role in the production.

The performances are scheduled for August 14th, 15th, 16th and September 4th, 5th and 6th, 2025, each at 7:30 p.m. Tickets can already be reserved via the Kulturreederei website, with ticket prices ranging between 10 and 25 EUR - a ticket model that allows visitors to pay what they can or want. In this way, the cultural shipping company makes the theater accessible to a wide audience.

The mixture of historical narrative, music and the unique backdrop of the Ulrichskirche courtyard promises an unforgettable experience. The summer theater would not only be a place of entertainment, but also a space for reflection on the past and future, offering the opportunity to immerse yourself in a history long gone but still relevant.

Stop by and be amazed by this extraordinary theater production! Further information can be found on the website City of Hall.
