Over 120,000 universal donors: Saxony-Anhalt needs your blood!

On June 14, 2025, World Blood Donor Day, it will be particularly clear: blood donations save lives and are more important than ever. In Saxony-Anhalt there are now over 128,000 universal donors with the coveted blood group 0 Rhesus negative. This group is particularly in demand because their blood group allows them to donate universally to all other blood groups. According to current figures from the State Statistical Office and the German Red Cross, these donors are a valuable resource in medicine that can often make a decisive difference in emergencies.

Specifically, there are a total of 875,595 people with blood group 0 in Saxony-Anhalt, with the majority, namely 747,459 people, belonging to the Rhesus positive group. In contrast, the AB Rhesus negative blood group is rather rare, with only 21,356 people having it, making it the rarest blood group in the country. These figures illustrate the importance of blood donations, which are essential for many patients in critical situations.

Blood Type Compatibility: Saving a Life

Compatibility between donor and recipient is crucial for blood transfusions. For example, groups of people with Rhesus negative blood should only receive Rhesus negative blood. This is crucial because intolerance can lead to serious complications. While Rhesus positive people can receive a wider range of donations, Rhesus negative donors often have a more limited selection of donors, as the DRK website drk-blutspende.de explains to us.

Blood group 0 has a special role in this context. Since it does not contain antigens, it can be compatible with all other blood types. This makes them particularly valuable in emergencies when suitable blood is needed quickly. Around 15,000 blood donations are needed every day in Germany for the treatment of patients, which underlines the urgency of promoting the blood donation culture, which is often underestimated among the population.

The importance of blood group for donation

The relevance of the different blood groups is explained in detail by their properties:

  • Blutgruppe A: besitzt Antigen A
  • Blutgruppe B: besitzt Antigen B
  • Blutgruppe AB: hat Antigene A und B und kann nur an andere AB Spender spenden
  • Blutgruppe 0: ganz ohne Antigene, kann also universell spenden

These differences are crucial for transfusions, where a bedside test is performed beforehand to confirm ABO identity. This ensures that donor and recipient are actually compatible. In addition, blood group inheritance is a topic that affects many people and can often stimulate exciting discussions.

Regular participation in blood donation campaigns is an easy way for each of us to actively help and contribute to the health of those around us. At the DRK, anyone aged 18 or over can have their own blood group determined and thus establish a personal connection to this important topic. While the darkness in the blood donor account can often be challenging, as we have seen, the light of hope lies within each and every donor.

Given the current numbers and the importance of blood donation, we should all take notice. Everyone can do their part in everyday life to combat the dangerous shortage of blood. Ultimately, it is often the everyday heroes among us who can bring about big changes with small actions.
