On a bike tour for research: Ulm citizen scientist in action!
Ulm, Deutschland - The Ulm network for citizens' science is planning a comprehensive research bike tour along the Danube cycle path at Pentecost. The one -week tour, which includes about 400 kilometers, is carried out by around ten people. The aim is to explore the landscape and at the same time carry out targeted research. The participants use a newly developed sensor system that captures street damage to the millimeter. At the same time, they document the biodiversity with the Intotheralist app, which is considered one of the best -known projects of the Citizen Science and enables valuable contributions to scientific research. According to Innaturalist, the project with a variety of participations is an important platform for everyone who is interested in recording flora and fauna, supported by an accompanying app called Seek to identify plants and animals.
The tour is a cooperation between the Ulm Technical University, the ADFC Ulm/Neu-Ulm/Alb-Donau-Kreis and the University of Ulm, including the Zawiw and Botanical Garden. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Hans-Sauer Foundation promote the project that serves to increase traffic safety and to improve road maintenance. By collecting and evaluating data by citizens, society is also more involved in scientific processes, which creates added value for research, as described on the official side of the bmbf is.
recording of biodiversity and networking
The participants of the tour will not only document road damage, but also map the plant and animal species, the observations of which flow into an international biodiversity database. Research is accompanied by the botanical garden of the University of Ulm. This Initiative not only promotes exchange with other Citizen Science projects along the way, but also the networking of citizen scientists. The Ulm network also wants to obtain national visibility to support the dialogue with projects along the Danube.
Special highlights of the tour are the scenic beauties through which the route leads, including the impressive Schlögener Schlinge, the Strudengau and the UNESCO cultural landscape of Wachau. During the tour, the impressions and research results are shared every day via Instagram at @ulm.forscht. The stages of the tour are planned as follows:- 05.06.2025: Arrival Ulm → Passau
- 06.06.2025: Passau → Schlögener Schlinge
- 07.06.2025: Schlögener Schlinge → Linz
- 08.06.2025: Linz → Grein
- 09.06.2025: Grein → Melk
- 10.06.2025: Melk → Traismauer

Citizens' Sciences offer a platform for everyone who wants to actively participate in scientific research and discovery. This not only promotes the knowledge of citizens about scientific processes, but also contributes to improving the database for scientific knowledge. This is also shown in the 15 Citizen Science projects that are funded by the BMBF, in which 18,800 citizens actively participate.
