The sandbox enables the participating, interactive miniature landscapes to form and develop a deeper understanding of water flows and the effects of terrain forms on flood events. TU Braunschweig reports that the technology is supported by a combination of sensors and projectors. These devices record the changes in the sand surface and project a color -coded height model that effectively complements the real landscape.

The use of the kinect sensor in the augmented reality sandbox allows users to move sand with their hands or shovels to make hills and valleys. This physical interaction creates a dynamic and interactive topographical map on which water is simulated in real time. The system visualizes how water flows through the different terrain forms, which convey a vivid picture of the possible consequences of heavy rain or flood. The festival ends with a university sports festival on Sunday, June 22nd, which ensures even more interactive experiences.
