Hasso Plattner realizes life dream: new university campus in Potsdam!
The Hasso Plattner Foundation has taken over the financing of the renovation of the old state parliament on the Brauhausberg in Potsdam to create a new university campus. This project should not only solve the room conflicts with the University of Potsdam, but also to be seen as a fulfillment of a lifelong dream for the SAP co-founder Hasso Plattner. The foundation has guaranteed the complete costs for the renovation and new construction of several buildings, with Plattner estimates the expenditure on a three -digit million amount, not to billions. This reports rbb24 .
By shifting the faculties for legal, social and economics from the Griebnitzsee campus on the Brauhausberg, the capacity of the Hasso Plattner Institute, which specializes in IT innovations, will significantly increase. The number of students could double from the current 1,000 to 2,000, which could also result in a doubling of the professorships.
The University of Potsdam also benefits financially from this move because it will sell its buildings at Griebnitzsee. Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke described the project as a "win-win-win situation" for the HPI, the university and the country. This renovation should also set up contact points for US scientists and students who are under pressure in their home country. In this context, Plattner has expressed concerns about the current university situation in the USA and sees opportunities for Germany. Nonetheless, the university landscape in Germany faces challenges. According to the University Rector Conference (HRK) , almost 90% of funds for universities come from public sources. These are heavily dependent on the federal states, which 75% of the funds provide. The demand for university studies requires additional investments in university capacities because the countries often have difficulty ensuring sufficient basic financing. In this course, the federal government has continuously increased its expenses for research to sustainably support the universities. The university pact, launched in 2007 by the federal and state governments, aims to meet the growing demand for study places. Nevertheless, the financing structure of the universities has changed, since many funds are only available for a limited period. In order to react to these developments, the HRK calls for a fundamental turning in university financing and has presented the "two-pillar plus model" to stabilize the financial basis of the universities. financial perspectives for the University of Potsdam
