Young people in Ukraine dream of emigration: 79% see opportunities!
The current demographic location in Ukraine is alarming: Experts predict a further decline in the Ukrainian population. The Wolodymyr Selenskyj foundation published some worrying results in a survey among young people between the ages of 13 and 16, called "Future Index". A quarter of the respondents state to think seriously about emigration.
In particular, the majority of young people see greater opportunities abroad. According to the survey, 79 percent believe that they have more scope for maneuver there, 63 percent develop the desire to discover the world, and 39 percent hope for better educational quality. For parents, emigration is less attractive: 87 percent do not support their children in the considerations of leaving their hometown. Security plays a central role for parents, while the young people only order this criterion in fourth place.
Different perspectives: gender and regions
The willingness to move does not show a significant gender difference, but the attitudes vary significantly according to the region and social origin. Urban children who have completed school training often plan to move abroad rather than children from smaller settlements. This refers to deeper social and economic structures that influence life in Ukraine and the decision to emigrate.
The situation in Ukraine is not to be considered isolated. The migration movements within Europe, especially in connection with refugees and asylum seekers, are highlighted by the data of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF). The migration report 2023 represents the migration data of recent years and enables a comparison between different European countries. The challenges of integration and political measures in Germany complement the image of migration and its effects on the education systems.
The migration report, published on January 15, 2025, examines the phenomenon of irregular migration in addition to regular migration. This is done against the background of an integration barometer that records representative surveys for integration in Germany and illuminates the opinions of the population on migration and integration. The report offers a valuable basis for understanding the complexity of this topic and emphasizes the need for effective integration measures.
In summary, the current surveys and reports show how closely the topics of migration, education and security concerns are linked. Whether in Ukraine or in Germany, the challenges remain similar and require a targeted examination of the social and political framework. For more information on the demographic developments in Ukraine, please click on Eurostat .
