Lake Constance, this impressive, glittering water dream in the heart of Europe, has recently caused a stir with an exciting archaeological project. Since 2022, the Baden-Württemberg State Office for Monument Preservation (LAD) has been researching the bottom of the lake as part of the “Wrecks and Deep Sea” project. A remarkable 31 wrecks were discovered, including the first steamship to be native to the area. Dr. Julia Goldhammer, project manager and restorer in the Department of Wetland Archeology, leads the team in this fascinating scientific expedition that brings to light not only the water surface, but also the history of Lake Constance. By the end of 2024, over 250 areas of interest have been identified, of which 186 have been systematically studied. It turned out that 155 of these areas were either natural structures or human objects. The treasures unearthed are fascinating: a field of rubble with at least 17 wooden barrels, some of which are still well preserved, as well as two larger metal ship hulls, which may be the paddle steamers “SD Baden” and “SD Friedrichshafen II”, were discovered.

Insights into shipping and history

Particularly exciting is the discovery of an almost completely preserved cargo sailing ship, lying at great depths and equipped with a mast and yardarm. The quagga mussels that have settled on the ship have made it possible to see numerous details. These results provide valuable insights into navigation technology and shipbuilding from past eras. How Wikipedia states, Lake Constance, with an area of ​​536 km² and a maximum depth of 251 m, is not only a geographical but also a cultural center that connects the borders between Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

The project represents the first systematic study of the bottom of Lake Constance and provides a basis for further archaeological inventory as well as information about the state of preservation of the wrecks found. State-of-the-art technology was used: underwater robots and diving teams were used to analyze potential cultural assets, while the focus is on preserving documentary value. There are currently no plans to salvage individual objects. The results of the project are scheduled to be published in summer 2027.
