Attention, vacationer! Danger in beach fun: dig in the sand!

The Dutch North Sea coast attracts many vacationers from North Rhine-Westphalia who want to enjoy clean beaches and milder weather than in the Ruhr area. However, the popular destination Hoek van Holland also ensures concern among the rescue workers, such as Uelzener Presse hundreds of tragic bathing accidents occur every year. Some important rules of conduct, to bathe safely, are:

  • Bathing only in places with supervision or other bathers.
  • don't jump into unknown waters.
  • arms and legs cool into the water before diving.
  • go out of the water immediately in cold.
  • not in rivers swimming because of undetected currents.
  • pay attention to other bathers.

According to the DLRG, 417 people drowned bathing last year, with most accidents in lakes and rivers. A significant part of the incidents can be avoided by compliance with fundamental bathing rules, since 90 percent of the accidents took place in inland water, such as Swim.de

statistics and recommendations

At least 411 when the bathing deaths increase last year, for the first time since 2019 over 400, the situation remains worrying. Most accidents concerned men, with children up to 10 years among the victims. The DLRG recommends avoiding unusual waters and is reminiscent of the tragedy that can stand in the way of a nice bathing fun.

The dangers by the sea are varied: quick flow changes, strong surf and disregarding the DLRG flags signals can quickly lead to critical situations. The use of air mattresses in the sea also carries risks. The drowning figures illustrate that both preventive behavior and increased attention are crucial when bathing - for your own protection and that of others.

The experiences from previous years should sensitize us to combine the fun of water sports with the necessary caution.
