Andreas Toba crowns career with EM silver in Leipzig - a triumph!
Andreas Toba ended his career in a spectacular way on May 31, 2025 by winning the silver medal at the bar at the European Home Championship in Leipzig. In a sold-out arena with 5,500 spectators, the 32-year-old gymnast scored 14,000 points and thus secured second place behind the Lithuanian Robert Tvorogal, who won gold with 14.300 points. The Frenchman Anthony Mansard finished third with 13,966 points. After his exercise, Tobastanding received ovation, which underlines its achievements and its importance in German gymnastics.
This competition marks Toba’s second EM silver medal at the bar after winning the same medal in Basel in 2021. Toba, who had qualified for the bar final, experienced an emotional farewell, in which he expressed numerous thanks to his trainer, his family, friends and doctors. After the competition he was celebrated in exhibition hall 1, which illustrates the appreciation and popularity of the gymnast.
A look at the successes
Andreas Toba had an impressive career that led him to four Olympic Games. His appearance in Rio de Janeiro will be particularly remembered in 2016 when he did the pommel horse despite a cruciate ligament tear and thus acquired the nickname "Hero de Janeiro". In the future, Toba will bring in his experience as a national coach in Hanover and plans to continue gymnastics in the Bundesliga, depending on the requirements of his new position.
As part of the Turn-European Championship, the topic of “Safe Sport” was also dealt with. This is a program for prevention, intervention and dealing with violence in sport. The aim is to promote a culture of looking and action in which everyone involved can feel good. In the further competitions of the European Championship, Nils Dark was able to win the gold medal on the bar by scoring 13,900 points. Silver went to Ian Raubal from Switzerland with 13,766 points, while Timo Eder secured bronze with 13,700 points. In the floor final, Karina Schönmaier from Bremen took sixth place with 12.966 points. She was previously a European champion at the jump and contributed to the silver medal in the team mixed final, which she won together with Timo Eder.
