The tensions in Ukraine continue to increase, while the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) again warns of a possible nuclear disaster. On June 4, 2025, IAEA boss Rafael Mariano Grossi expressed that the military attacks in the region, in particular on the Saporischschja nuclear power plant, had accepted alarming proportions. He underlined the urgency and necessity of international presence in Ukraine to avoid serious accidents. In the past few days, the IAEA expert teams have been forced to visit shelter three times, which Grossi has referred to as the most intensive day with air rod salmets since the end of 2022. According to the reports, the security situation for the nuclear infrastructure is extremely critical.
The IAEA has had a constant presence in the Saporischschja nuclear power plant since September 2022, which has been under Russian control since March 2022. Due to the current militarized threats, the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj calls for an unrestricted presence of the IAEA in the facility. He sees the re -commissioning of the work sought by Russia without involving Ukraine as absurd and dangerous.

While the Russian power plant management spoke of an explosion over the dome of the reactor, the IAEA did not indicate a risk to nuclear security. Nevertheless, the concern and the serious effects of such attacks are obvious.
Russian attacks and their consequences
The situation in the Saporischschja region remains tense. In Russian attacks, at least three people were killed on the same day and several were injured. In view of these developments, Ukraine is forced to ask for more western support, especially in the form of air defense systems.
The IAEA remains a central instance in the surveillance process and the protection of the Ukrainian nuclear power plants since the beginning of the conflict, and its role is considered essential to maintain nuclear security in an environmentally endangered environment. While the situation continues to worsen, the international community remains required to take effective measures in order to protect the stability in the region.
