Manuel Baum returns to FC Augsburg: New chance in the offspring!

Augsburg, Deutschland - Manuel Baum, former coach of FC Schalke 04, plans to return to FC Augsburg to take over the management of the youth performance center (NLZ). This decision follows his last position at RB Leipzig, which he will give up on June 30, 2025. Baum's departure takes place for "private reasons" and has been agreed by mutual agreement, as Marcel Schäfer, Managing Director of RB Leipzig, announced in an official message and thanked Baum's commitment.

Baum took over the team of FC Schalke 04 in the 2020/2021 season after two match days by David Wagner. In his short time at Schalke, he stood on the sidelines eleven times and achieved a point cut of 0.64, which makes him one of the most unsuccessful coaches in the history of the club. Only one victory in eleven games ultimately led to the descent of the Schalke to the 2nd Bundesliga.

career and success

At Augsburg, Baum experienced its most successful phase as a trainer. He took over the professional team in 2016 and led it to 13th place in 2016/17, followed by a 12th place in the 2017/18 season. However, after the sporting success failed to do so, his term of office ended in April 2019. He began his coaching career at SpVgg Unterhaching, where he worked in various positions before taking over the management of the second team of FC Augsburg in 2014.

After his time at FC Augsburg, Baum switched to Germany's youth team before taking over the coaching position at Schalke in 2020. At some point in 2023 he accepted the position of the sports director at the NLZ from RB Leipzig. Now he should, according to reports from the West to restructure the youth work at FC Augsburg and shape the transition of youth players into professional care.

training and trainer development

Manuel Baum was born on August 30, 1979 in Landshut. After his active career as a goalkeeper who led him to FC Ismaning, he studied sports science at the Technical University of Munich. After completing the teacher office in sports and business, Baum devoted himself to his career as a coach.

In Germany there is a structured training system for trainers that comprises different license stages from C to pro license. It promotes lifelong learning and offers numerous further training opportunities to support coaches in their development as a "player developer".

barriers in access to the coaching career are broken down by low -threshold entry offers so that more interested parties can get into sports. The basis of this system is the requirements of the UEFA Trainer Convention 2020, which aim to increase the quality of the trainer training and to focus on individual trainer development.
