Refugee accommodation in Bautzen: A new glimmer of hope?

Refugee accommodation in Bautzen: A new glimmer of hope?

In the district of Bautzen, the accommodation of refugee people is a central topic. With a quota of only 18.9 percent of decentralized accommodation, the district takes a special position compared to Leipzig, where the quota is almost 36 percent. In Leipzig, only apartments with their own rental contract are part of decentralized accommodation. Left-wing politician Nagel criticizes the current situation and demands the dismantling of makeshift accommodation, in particular the tent accommodation in Leipzig. It sees potential for improvements in accommodation in rented apartments in many counties and emphasizes the need to create more affordable living space.

The State Directorate of Saxony has also found that the number of newly arriving migrants in recording facilities is very declining. Only 2,378 migrants were registered in the first five months of 2023, compared to 3,842 in 2022 and 7,684 in 2021. The most common countries of origin are Venezuela, Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Turkey. At the end of April 2023, 12,229 rejected asylum seekers were obliged to leave, including 10.120 with the status as tolerated.

reactivation of refugee accommodation in Bautzen

The city of Bautzen will reactivate refugee accommodation at Dresdener Straße 14, which is to be put into operation with the first residents until the middle of the month. This accommodation is designed for up to 100 people and the investments amount to around 75,000 euros. These funds are intended for technical systems, building permit, repairs and play options for children. The accommodation is intended to include asylum seekers, Afghan local powers and refugees for humanitarian reasons, but so far no integration offers are provided by third parties, such as

Due to a continuing flow of refugees from Belarus and increased unauthorized entry, the district is forced to move away from an earlier promise that excluded a new use of the building. This was the case three years ago due to residents' complaints about noise and violence. A conversation with residents regarding the reactivation of the accommodation has already taken place. The residents and the possibilities of the staff to improve the situation were also discussed here. The round-the-clock staff should be on site to take care of the interests of the residents and to act as a contact for residents.

demographic challenges and migration

The context of the current refugee situation is also shaped by geopolitical circumstances, especially by the Russian attack war on Ukraine. At the end of 2023, 976,905 people seeking protection were registered in Germany, which corresponds to 30.8 percent of all those seeking protection. The Syrian nationals present the second highest group with 711,650, followed by Afghan protection seekers with 322,570. High shares of refugees can be found in East Germany and Bavaria, while for some regions such as Tirschenreuth and Bamberg, particularly high quotas of Ukrainian and Russian protection seekers are recorded.

These developments require significant adjustments and measures in the integration and living situation of refugee people in Germany, who will continue to gain in importance, since the influx of those seeking protection continues in the future. The district of Bautzen and the city of Leipzig are faced with the challenge of optimizing existing accommodation options and creating new perspectives for the accommodation of asylum seekers.
