Zweibrücken: Memories of the War and forgotten Finds for Boming

Wolfgang Ohler, a last generation survivor who was born in World War II, looks back on the explosive history of his hometown Zweibrücken. The legacies of the war are still noticeable there. "There are 80 years of peace in the country," says Ohler, reminiscent that bombs are discovered regularly from this time. Experts are required to defuse these dangers, because the city still has to struggle with the consequences of the war, like Rheinpfalz.de

The reconstruction after the destruction of the war was difficult. In many places, rubble was removed with truck and Zweibrücken was badly affected. Fortunately, there were no dangerous legacies in the recent construction projects, such as the new leisure facility on Helmholtz. Nevertheless, Ohler criticizes that the cost of cleaning up on the city and its citizens were passed on. A law from 1952 offered civilians for compensation for war damage, but cities and municipalities were not taken into account.

regular bombing in Germany

The problem of bomb finds is a nationwide challenge. On Wednesday in Cologne, several American bombs found their way to the surface. These events led to the evacuation of 15 couples who wanted to marry in the historic town hall. Due to the bombing, the wedding ceremonies were transferred to the Porz district, as reported wdr.de . From 8 a.m., bell bends were set up and roadblocks were checked in the evacuation area.

The defusing and the associated measures, such as the blocking of the Hohenzollern Bridge, led to considerable disturbances in long-distance and local transport in Cologne. Deutsche Bahn reported that several trains had to be redirected and there were delays. The Cologne traffic companies also reported massive impairments in their company. These incidents illustrate how deep the effects of the Second World War even intervene in everyday life decades later.

not just material damage

The long -term damage to the war can not only be felt physically, but also emotionally and socially. As the bpb.de had a lot of consideration of the trauma and the reintegration of prisoners of war had far-reaching social consequences. Although measures to rehabilitate former military members were taken in the following years, the path to complete social integration often remained stony.

The reports of these events show that the burden of war, both in Zweibrücken and in other parts of Germany, is far from overcome. Wolfgang Ohler rightly expresses his concerns that the citizens should continue to pay for the war damage, while the legal and moral managers are not held accountable.
