Russia represents the ultimatum for ceasefire - Ukraine remains skeptical!

In the UN Security Council, Russia, led by UN ambassador Wassili Norsja, has declared his willingness to negotiate a possible ceasefire in Ukraine. This announcement takes place in a tense political climate in which both parties to conflict, Russia and Ukraine have different perspectives on the conditions for peace. Numbery clearly stated that western countries have to set their arms deliveries to Ukraine and that Ukraine should end its mobilization before an ceasefire is possible. This is a central point, because Russia sees the ceasefire as an opportunity to work on a sustainable solution to the conflict, while Ukraine has been calling for a 30-day ceasefire as a prerequisite for the negotiations since March

The Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj has already called for a fire break without priority. Numerous, however, expressed concerns that Ukraine could possibly use the ceasefire to reorganize militarily. Furthermore, he emphasized that the Russian armed forces are always ready to continue the fighting, and it is unclear how these statements will have an effect in the upcoming discussions.

political reactions and international influences

The political situation is also influenced by the assessments of western leaders. US President Donald Trump has accused both Selenskyj and Putin to be stubborn and thus block progress in the armistice process. In the meantime, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged Ukrainian head of state Selenskyj to take part in the upcoming negotiations in Istanbul. Erdogan sees the possibility of driving the peace process through strong delegations of both countries. So far, however, Ukraine has not made a decision about whether it will send a delegation to Istanbul.

In the past few days, the Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrij Sybiha Russia has sharply criticized and demanded that more pressure on Moscow are exerted. He emphasizes the need for sanctions and increased support for Ukraine. This claim is supported by a report that points out that the US Senate is planning advice on new sanctions against Russia next week.

The situation on the front

Current reports from Ukraine also indicate that the Russian armed forces in the Sumy sector are increasingly ineffective and cannot make any significant progress. At the same time, attacks on Charkiw, in which several people were injured, and Ukraine reported a major fire after a Russian drone attack on Ismail.

In a meeting of the UN Security Council, Selenskyj had already made it clear that the Ukrainian right to self-defense had to be enforced. He described the Russian actions as an international crime and demanded that Russia had to be forced to peace. For this purpose, China's Foreign Minister Wang is also cited, calling for reinforced peace negotiations and named three essential principles for the negotiations: no expansion of the battle area, no escalation of the fights and no provocation by the parties involved.

The complex geopolitical game that is currently taking place in Ukraine is still influenced by many factors, including the strategic decisions of the nations involved and the subsequent international reactions. While the talks in Istanbul are imminent, it remains to be seen whether real progress can be made or whether the conflict occurs in a new escalation level.
