Ukraine urges new sanctions after devastating attacks!

Kiew, Ukraine - On May 24, 2025, violent attacks by the Russian armed forces occurred in Ukraine. Ukrainian officials then demanded increased sanctions against Russia. As Al Jazera Rockets in their attack on Kiev. According to Ukrainian information, 250 drones and 14 ballistic rockets were used, with several residential buildings and a shopping center being damaged. At least 15 people were injured, while the regions of Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa and Zaporizhia were also affected.

The Ukrainian air defense was able to intercept six ballistic rockets and 245 drones, many of which were of Iranian origin. The incident in the Charkiw region was particularly tragic, where four Ukrainians were killed and several injured. The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that at least 100 Ukrainian drones tried to attack Russian goals, with 64 unmanned aircraft being shot down in the Belgorod region.

prisoner exchange and diplomatic efforts

This military incident occurred immediately after an exchange of 270 soldiers and 120 civilians on the Ukrainian border with Belarus. The Süddeutsche Zeitung reports that both sides have agreed on the exchange of a total of 1,000 prisoners. President Wolodymyr Selenskyj described the night of attacks as "difficult" and called for more pressure on Russia to reach an agreement. The G7 countries also signal that they threaten further sanctions if Russia does not agree to an armistice.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha criticized that Russia did not send a peace note and still have attacks on civil goals. The recent talks in Istanbul only led to an agreement on the exchange of prisoners of war, but not to a peace agreement. This shows the ongoing tensions in the conflict, which has been going on since 2014 when Russia began the annexation of the Crimea and the War in Donbas.

Putin's strategy and resistance of Ukraine

In the context of the current attacks, Wladimir Putin announced the creation of a buffer zone "along the border", especially after his visit to the Kursk region, which is partly checked by Ukrainian troops. Ukraine rejects these plans as a lack of interest in peace and Foreign Minister Sybiha emphasizes that Putin's demands are canceling peace talks. Ministry spokesman Horhij Tychyj also suggested that Putin could build the buffer zone in his own area.

The military situation remains tense, and Ukraine considers the attacks and Putin's expansive strategies as evidence of Russia's aggressive course. In view of the military developments and the constant threat of nut weapons, international diplomacy is still challenged. Sustainable peace remains questionable as long as Russia does not consider military options to be failed. The demand for an immediate ceasefire is still in the room, while the international community, as in the case of recognition of kidnapped areas as "folk republics", has to deal with the various dimensions of the conflict.
