Farewell to Sarah Hornschuch: A new chapter at 1. FC Union Berlin!
The football world in Berlin will be marked by a remarkable separation today, August 14, 2025: Sarah Hornschuch and 1. FC Union Berlin are going their separate ways from now on. The talented goalkeeper, who has played for the club since 2014, has enjoyed an impressive career that began with promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga. According to the FC Union Berlin website reported, the then 14-year-old Hornschuch joined the U17 team and just a year later made the jump to the first women's team.
With fresh enthusiasm and a clear goal in mind, Hornschuch fought for the place as the starting goalkeeper in her first season. Her efforts did not go unnoticed and she was able to celebrate promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga at the end of the 2014/15 season. In the following season she was also in goal, but had to see the team relegated to the regional league at the end of the 2016/17 season. After another season in which Hornschuch moved to second division club FF USV Jena, she spent four years in Jena, making 14 appearances in the 1st Bundesliga, before returning to Berlin for the 2023/24 season.
A turbulent last year
In the past season, Hornschuch was only sporadically in the squad, but was not used. She gained valuable experience in the regional league and played three games for the U23 women. After a total of 50 competitive games and three promotions with FC Union, she now feels ready to take on new challenges. Hornschuch herself expressed her gratitude for the support of the fans and the time she spent in the Union jersey.
Jennifer Zietz, managing director of women's professional football at 1. FC Union Berlin, explained that the decision to terminate the contract was made by mutual consent. The reason for this is the lack of prospects for Hornschuch in the club's sporting development. The move marks a new phase in her career and the football community in Berlin will certainly be excited to see where the talented goalkeeper goes from here.
