Berlin remains a birth mole: the lowest rate in Germany!
Berlin, Deutschland - In Germany, the birth rate is under the pressure of a long -lasting trend. The latest survey shows that Berlin has the country's lowest birth rate again in 2024. According to rbb24 the number is only 1.21 children per woman. For comparison: Lower Saxony leads the ranking with 1.42 children, while Brandenburg as an East German state can come up with 1.34 children per woman.
The birth rate in Berlin, however, rose slightly compared to the previous year, from 1.17 to 1.21 children. However, the tendency is not positive in all of Germany: the birth rate fell by two percent in 2024, which could have extensive social effects. In general, the average age of mothers is 31.8 years at birth, while fathers are on average 34.7 years old.
Current births and trends
A look at the various factors shows that the birth rate has been a steady decline since the end of the 1990s. From over 810,000 newborns in 1997, the number even fell to around 663,000 in 2011, which has been the low since reunification. The increase in births by 2016 was due to several factors, such as the increased immigration and the expansion of childcare, but the numbers have been going back since 2017.
The future of birth rates
The situation is worrying. According to the statistics of Destatis , Germany has been listening to more deaths than births for many years. In 2023, the birth deficit was around 335,000, which reinforced the challenges of aging the company. These developments could not only burden the pension and care system, but also tighten the shortage of skilled workers on the labor market. Despite high immigration numbers, the demographic changes could not be stopped.
Against this background, it becomes clear that we have to deal with the question of how the state and society can react to these changes.
