There is currently a significant need for renovation of street lighting in Berlin. It is estimated that around 37,000 of the 190,000 light poles are older than 50 years and are in urgent need of replacement Time reported. The Senate Department for Transport and Environment has identified an immense investment backlog. The replacement of the old lanterns is expected to take years, despite the renewal measures that have begun.
Berlin has already replaced 1,400 electric pylons last year and 600 so far this year. The costs (operation and investments) for public lighting in 2024 will amount to around 70 million euros. In the budget planning for 2026, 79 million euros are requested, of which 20 million will come from a special fund. In the case of a double budget, which still has to be approved by the House of Representatives, these costly investments are important.
Renovation of street lights
Berlin is responsible for around 225,000 street lights. Im Laufe des Jahres 2024 wurden bereits 5.800 Elektrolampen durch moderne LED-Leuchten ersetzt; 6,400 have been added so far this year. At the same time, the replacement of the original 44,000 gas lamps is well advanced; around 17,000 are currently still in use. 1,300 gas lamps are expected to be converted by the end of 2023, with the cost of converting each lantern being around 10,000 euros.
Particularly critical are the approximately 3,250 gas lanterns, which should not be replaced for monument protection reasons. The Gaslicht-Kultur association expresses concerns about the abolition of these traditional lamps that shape the cityscape.
Dark markets and their trends
