On the hottest day of the year, June 22nd, 2025, Berlin will have become a hellish trip for many swimming pool goers. With temperatures that even reached 35 degrees, the outdoor pools were overcrowded and the nerves of many of those waiting were tense to breaking point. Tagesspiegel reports that some outdoor swimming pools such as the Wuhlheide summer pool and the Mariendorf summer pool were closed because they were unable to grant further admission. The Berliner Bäderbetriebe (BBB) imposed entry bans and the police were called in to maintain order.
The measure was necessary after fights broke out among those waiting. The situation was also tense in other pools, such as the Humboldthain and the Pankow outdoor pool. The German Weather Service had warned in advance of “severe heat pollution”, which did not exactly defuse the situation. The Wilmersdorf summer pool was another hotspot, where security staff informed around 300 people waiting about the admission stop. Meanwhile, a group of five people showed aggressive behavior and forced their way through the gates, which required a massive police operation, reports T-Online.
Disputes and Safeguards
In Wuhlheide there were arguments between those waiting, which made it necessary for an ambulance to arrive on site. Despite the tense situation, the mood in the outdoor pools itself remained largely relaxed. The police appealed to those waiting to treat each other with respect and to show understanding, especially in view of the incidents in recent years in which violent attacks have regularly occurred in Berlin's outdoor pools.
With regard to the security situation, it is important to mention that an incident at the Wilmersdorf summer pool recently caused a stir. A group tried to force their way into the bathroom after an employee pointed out that it was overcrowded. Security forces were forced to intervene and one person was eventually arrested. These incidents have also prompted the police to take clearer security measures, reported Focus.
Last weekend there were more than 90,000 guests in the outdoor pools, which corresponded to the entire number of visitors in May. The rush and growing interest in Berlin's outdoor pools must be understood against this background.
