The price trend and its causes
The reasons for the price increase are varied: higher costs for ingredients such as meat, tomatoes and cucumbers as well as the introduction of the minimum wage are driving prices up. More and more snack bars are being forced to adjust their prices. Adnan Demirsöz, owner of the “Teras Restaurant and Grill”, has increased the price from 6.50 euros to 7 euros and plans to even go up to 7.50 euros in the next six months. Near the popular location in the Mall of Berlin, a kebab costs 8.90 euros.
Another player in the kebab business is Lukas Podolski with his new branch of the Mangal kebab chain in Kreuzberg, which offers kebabs at a price of 7.50 euros. Cihan Karaman, a leading manufacturer of kebab skewers, also says that his product would actually have to be sold for 10 euros in order to be able to operate sustainably.
Doner kebab as a Berlin cultural asset
Despite the rising prices, the kebab remains a popular dish and a symbol of culinary diversity in Berlin. The price range for a classic kebab is between 3.50 euros and 8 euros, although particularly good shops such as Mustafa's or Rüyam Vegetable Kebap can charge higher prices for better quality. The price-performance ratio of the kebab is still favorable compared to other cities, such as Munich. A kebab there costs an average of 8.53 euros.
Osman focuses on keeping his snack bar clean and relies on word of mouth, while bigger names in the industry can sometimes no longer offer anything less than 8.00 euros. “I don’t plan any price increases,” assures Osman. He undertakes that a kebab from him will never cost more than 5 euros, thereby improving the accessibility of this Berlin specialty.
Will the price increases really put a damper on Osman's plans? His fair price offer and love of craftsmanship could give him the necessary support to assert himself against the competition. The kebab culture in Berlin remains an exciting chapter on the city's menu.
