A central topic was the amendment of the Federal Criminal Police Act (BKA law). The background was the requirements of the Federal Constitutional Court, which discussed some criticisms on the previous regulations last year. Among other things, these regulated the data storage of suspects, which from now on is linked to strict criteria. This decision was considered urgently necessary in the hearing on June 23, 2025, since the need for improvement was found. The aim is to create clear legal relationships for the digital transformation of the police, as Prof. Dr. Louisa Specht-Remenschneider, the Federal Commissioner for Data Protection, emphasized.

New weapons law meets resistance

In addition to the data protection changes, the weapons law was tackled. The dangers that emerge from a newly developed needle revolver have prompted the legislators to pull the helm around here. In the future, a state approval will be needed to be in possession of one of these revolvers - otherwise it would have been freely for sale. Last but not least, police officers in the Ministry of the Interior demonstrated the risks of this new weapon type before voting. This measure aims to increase public security and to protect citizens from potential dangers.

Another point on the agenda was the introduction of the new animal husbandry logo for meat products. Originally it was to be introduced in August 2025, now this will be postponed until March 2026. The reason for this is a planned amendment, which is to be extended to extend the labeling of meat products. This was discussed in particular by the Union and the SPD, who want to show a good knack when developing the changes.

However, there were also violent voices of criticism. Prof. Dr. Clemens doctor from the University of Economics and Law Berlin was dissatisfied with the legislative process and warned a revision. The temporal approach was also considered inadequate - here more clearly it must be communicated what the next steps are. A coordinated procedure is necessary in order not to endanger confidence in the process.
