Bundestag passes new laws: stricter gun safety and animal logo delay!

On June 27, 2025, the Bundestag made several explosive decisions that affect both security policy and social aspects. In an exciting meeting that took place in Berlin at the Paul-Löbe-Haus, the course was set for stricter regulations in the areas of data protection and gun law. The introduction of a new animal husbandry logo also caused discussion and will be postponed again.

A central topic was the amendment of the Federal Criminal Police Office Act (BKA Act). The background to this was the requirements of the Federal Constitutional Court, which last year addressed some points of criticism of the previous regulations. These regulated, among other things, the data storage of suspects, which from now on will be subject to strict criteria. This decision was considered urgently necessary at the hearing on June 23, 2025, as a need for improvement was identified. The aim is to create clear legal relationships for the digital transformation of the police, as Prof. Dr. Louisa Specht-Riemenschneider, the Federal Commissioner for Data Protection, emphasized.

New gun laws meet with resistance

In addition to the data protection changes, gun law was addressed. The dangers posed by a newly developed needle revolver have prompted legislators to turn things around. In the future, you will need a government permit to own one of these revolvers - otherwise it would have been freely available for sale. Last but not least, police officers in the Interior Ministry demonstrated the risks of this new type of weapon before the vote. This measure aims to increase public safety and protect citizens from potential dangers.

Another item on the agenda was the introduction of the new animal husbandry logo for meat products. It was originally scheduled to be introduced in August 2025, but this will now be delayed until March 2026. The reason for this is a planned amendment that is intended to extend the labeling requirement for meat products. This was discussed in particular by the Union and the SPD, who want to show a good hand in drafting the changes.

Criticism of the introductions

However, there were also strong voices of criticism. Prof. Dr. Clemens Arzt from the Berlin School of Economics and Law was dissatisfied with the legislative process and called for a revision. The timing was also considered inadequate - what the next steps are needs to be communicated more clearly. A coordinated approach is necessary in order not to endanger trust in the process.

In summary, it can be said that the Bundestag has signaled a significant change of course with these decisions. While some are happy about the tightening of gun laws, others see the need for more legal clarity in the area of data storage as a priority. The discussion about the animal husbandry logo remains exciting and will continue to shape the social debate. You can find out more about this in the report from Deutschlandfunk and the detailed explanations of the Bundestag.
