Roof truss drama in Berlin: evacuation after danger of collapse!
On August 28, 2025, a dramatic incident occurred on Reinhardtstrasse in Berlin-Mitte. The roof structure of a five-story residential and commercial building was in danger of collapsing, which called the fire department to the scene at 10:01 a.m. To ensure the safety of residents, 13 residents were evacuated while additional residents were absent due to vacation. The measures went quickly and Reinhardtstrasse was closed between Friedrichstrasse and Albrechtstrasse for probably several hours daily news reported.
When the fire brigade arrived, they determined that the entire building was in danger of collapsing; However, it later became clear that only the roof structure was affected. There was visible damage: the middle of the roof was lifting slightly away from the facade and the roof truss had shifted forward. As a precautionary measure, it was necessary to deploy the Technical Relief Agency (THW), which was alerted with special forces and vehicles to carry out security measures. Parked cars also had to be removed from the street so that the measures could be carried out without obstacles. However, there were no costs for the affected drivers as the towing operations were necessary to make space for the THW operation.
Coordination of relief efforts
This was not the first time that THW was active in Berlin. Similar operations in the past, such as the critical incident on Pohlestrasse, show the importance of such measures. There, a gable wall of a detached residential building was alerted because of subsidence and the risk of collapse. The rapid response of construction consultants, who recommended the evacuation of nearly 300 people at the time, was crucial to the safety of residents. These operations required extensive coordination between various THW specialist groups, who monitored and secured the situation using highly specialized techniques, as stated in a report THW Treptow described.
Given the current situation on Reinhardtstrasse, there is a risk that parts of the roof or facade will fall onto the street. The specialists and structural engineers involved had already been on site a few days before, which sparked a proactive discussion about the dangerous situation. The entire situation was already in view and the fire department was alerted due to possible further changes. As a responsible measure, it was decided to remove parts of the roof to increase safety during the work, which was expected to last into the night. The period in which the evacuees will return is still unclear and remains open for the time being.
The rapid response of the authorities and the good cooperation with specialized emergency services have made a significant contribution to the safety of the population in such a critical situation. At a time when storms and other external influences are constantly threatening residential buildings, it remains essential to keep the public regularly informed about such issues and to optimize preparations in the city.
