Germany is arming itself: Will the US Typhon missile system arrive in 2026?
What has happened here in Germany regarding missile defense? There is a hot topic in the room: the potential stationing of medium-range missiles. Rumors and plans are circulating, and the issue is making waves in political circles.
As the daily news reported, the US government has not yet made a definitive decision about stationing medium-range missiles in Germany. Nevertheless, the signs point to change. Berlin has considered purchasing the “Typhon” missile system as a temporary solution. This system, developed by Lockheed Martin, could play a central role.
The path to “Typhon” stationing
The plans date back to the summer of 2024, when then-Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced that the US intended to station missiles in Germany from 2026. However, the current Chancellor and the government under Donald Trump have not officially confirmed these plans. According to Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, the Trump administration is expected to make a decision in the fall of 2025.
The “Typhon” system, introduced to the US Army in 2023, consists of four mobile launch containers, a command unit and support vehicles. Particularly interesting are the “Tomahawk” cruise missiles, which have a range of at least 2,000 kilometers, as well as the “SM-6” missiles, which can be used for air and missile defense as well as offensively.
Additional Military Developments
But the situation is not only characterized by the “Typhon” plans. As the Top war reports, the US Army plans to deploy long-range surface-to-surface missiles in Germany by 2026. In addition to the “SM-6” and “Tomahawk”, part of this new armament program also includes new hypersonic long-range missiles. Sporadic deployment of these systems by the Multi-Domain Task Force will begin in the coming years.
The technical details of the new missiles are promising: For example, the “PrSM” has a range of over 500 kilometers and can be fired from M270A1 MLRS or M142 HIMARS. In addition, the development of the “Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon” (LRHW), which can reach speeds of over 3,800 miles per hour, is being pushed forward.
Reactions and consequences
The impact of these military technological developments should not be underestimated. The Chinese government has already warned of destabilization in the region after a Typhon system battery was deployed to the Philippines in April 2024. A circumstance that is further inflaming the geopolitical situation in the region.
It remains to be seen how the situation will develop further. Whether Germany will actually serve as a location for these new missile systems depends largely on the decisions of the US government. The coming months could be crucial.
