EVA circulation elected President of the International Auschwitz Committee
München, Deutschland - On May 31, 2025, Dr. Eva circulation elected as the new President of the International Auschwitz Committee (IAK). With this decision at a presidium meeting in Berlin, the 82-year-old follows the Polish-Jewish journalist Marian Turski, who died in February 2025 at the age of 98. The IAK represents Holocaust survivors from 19 countries and is based in Berlin. Eva Umlauf itself is one of the latest survivors of the Auschwitz Nazi extermination camp.
circulation was born in a Slovak labor camp in 1942 and experienced the horror of Auschwitz up close. At the end of October 1944, she was deported to the camp with her pregnant mother and father. As she and her mother survived, her father was shot in a death march. After the liberation in April 1945, her sister was born in Auschwitz. Today circulation lives in Munich, where she works as a pediatrician and psychotherapist. She uses her life story to keep the dangers of democracy in mind and convey the lessons of history to them.
call to vigilance
The circulation in the political discussion is particularly committed. In January 2023, she turned to the then Union Chancellor Friedrich Merz in an open letter and asked not to adopt the influx limitation law together with the AfD. Ultimately, this law did not find a majority in parliament. Her commitment is not only an indication of the need to preserve the culture of memory, but also to the current political landscape in Germany, which is increasingly shaped by right -wing extremists. The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, for example, classifies the AfD as "secured right -wing extremist".
The International Auschwitz Committee not only campaigns for the concerns of the survivors, but also promotes more educational offers on this topic. Karin Prien, the Federal Minister of Education, campaigns for compulsory visits to KZ memorials for students in order to raise awareness of the crimes of National Socialism. Christoph Heubner, the executive vice president of the IAK, commented on these proposals of the Minister of Education and emphasized the importance of such initiatives.
a symbol of the reminder
Auschwitz, now a synonym for the Holocaust worldwide, experienced the murder of more than one million people, mostly Jews during its existence. About six million Jews were murdered in Europe throughout the Schoah. These terrible numbers are not only part of the story, but a reminder to the current and future society. Umlauf's history and their voice are important anchor points in the culture of remembrance.
The IAK continues to plan various initiatives, including memorial events and campaigns against right -wing extremism. On January 27, 2025, a commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau took place, another sign of the tireless work of the committee, to keep the memory of the countless victims and to take up the dangers of extremism.
