Gerry Weber closes Berlin branches: Huge clearance sale started!
In a sad turn of events for the fashion world, the Gerry Weber brand will close its last stores in Germany. The fashion manufacturer, which has been struggling with financial difficulties for years, has now announced that it will close all of its 40 remaining stores in Germany's cities by the end of August. This also affects the three shops in Berlin, which are located in Schloss Steglitz, Forum Köpenick and Eastgate Marzahn Berlin Live reported.
Gerry Weber, known for its women's fashion, was once an integral part of the German fashion scene and had over 170 branches. But several failed restructuring attempts in 2019 and 2023 led to a drastic decline. Most recently, the company had to close 122 of its 171 stores and cut around 450 jobs, which once again illustrates the worrying economic situation daily news refills.
A sale with big discounts
Clearance sales are already underway in the remaining Gerry Weber stores, with discounts of up to 70 percent on many products. Given the closures, this is the last chance for customers to stock up on the popular fashion. Interestingly, Gerry Weber's online store is already closed, indicating that the brand will completely withdraw from the German market landscape.
Luckily for fashion fans, the brand wouldn't disappear entirely. The takeover by the Spanish company Victrix gives hope that Gerry Weber will be reorganized under new structures. Victrix plans to continue operating the brand under its own umbrella, while women's fashion will be sold through retail partners in the future, although concrete details are currently missing. The economic circumstances surrounding this takeover are also currently unclear.
Market development and the pressure on the industry
These developments come at a time when the entire fashion industry in Germany is under great pressure. The pandemic has not only hit brick-and-mortar retailers hard, but has also changed consumers' purchasing habits. Customers are currently more economical, while the costs for energy, rents and wages continue to rise. According to an upcoming study by the Fashion Council Germany, prepared in collaboration with Oxford Economics and whose results will be presented on January 14, 2025, the current state of the German fashion industry will be examined in detail until 2024. Sustainability and digital innovations are discussed, among other things Fashion Council Germany communicates.
The impending closure of Gerry Weber not only closes another chapter in the history of a once thriving brand, but also sends another sign of how fragile the situation on the German fashion market has become. This is a painful loss for many customers, but it could also be an opportunity for new brands to fill the void - in the spirit of "new game, new luck" for the fashion world.
