High-speed train from Rome to Berlin: starting signal for Europe!
The railway in Europe sets new standards! An exciting project is taking shape: by the end of 2028 there will be a direct high-speed connection between Rome and Berlin. This project is part of the ambitious “Metro Europe” project and promises to make traveling between the two capitals significantly easier. Travelers currently have to plan between 14 and 18 hours for the connection from Rome to Berlin with two to three changes. That should change soon. The new connection will be operated with the Frecciarossa 1000, a high-speed train that was specially designed for several European railway networks and also runs through Austria. Secret Roma reports that the first new train connections from Rome to Munich and from Milan to Munich will be put into operation by 2026.
The offer will include a total of ten daily connections between Italy and Germany. These include, among other things, the routesMilan-Berlin,Naples-Munich,Naples-BerlinandRome-Berlinprovided. With the opening of the planned Brenner Base Tunnel, travel time will be shortened again by around an hour, which will further increase the attractiveness of rail transport. The Frecciarossa 1000 can take between 9 and 12 hours depending on the route and stops and usually runs at night.
Cooperation for new connections
An important element for the realization of these connections is the cooperation between German railways, Trenitalia and the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB). This partnership delivers the necessary structural changes to deliver high-speed trains over routes of approximately 600 km to Milan and 900 km to Rome. The first of these new services are planned from December 2026, with passengers able to expect a journey time of around 6.5 hours to Milan and 8.5 hours to Rome. From December 2028, the connections will also be expanded to Berlin.
The European Commission supports this project, which is one of ten selected projects to improve international rail transport. It aims to promote sustainable travel between capitals and make the Frecciarossa a truly European train. Test and approval drives are carried out in Germany, Italy and Austria in order to meet the high demands.
The future of travel between Rome and Berlin
The current alternatives for travelers are diverse, but often long and cumbersome. Flights last around 2 hours and 11 minutes, bus journeys last around 20 hours and car journeys last around 13.5 hours. In the future, high-speed rail will provide a refreshing option that saves both time and the environment. The question will probably arise: Who wouldn't want to use the speed of the Frecciarossa 1000 from time to time to travel between the cultural highlights of European cities?
This ambitious project, scheduled to be fully operational by the end of 2028, is a step in the right direction for modern rail transport in Europe. With just 9 to 12 hours travel time between Rome and Berlin, many travelers could soon stow their luggage in the new comfortable trains and immerse themselves in the beauty of Europe.
