Parking chaos at BER: Rudow residents are desperate about the lack of parking spaces!

With the arrival of summer time, many capital city residents are drawn to traveling again. But the high parking costs at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) not only cause discontent on the streets, but also drive some travelers to park in nearby districts, such as Rudow. As a result, residents are increasingly struggling with congested streets and a lack of parking spaces. According to a 2024 passenger survey, only 18% of passengers travel to the airport in their own car, further exacerbating the situation. Axel Schmidt, spokesman for the airport, showed understanding for the Rudowers' frustration, but emphasized that responsibility for passengers' parking behavior was not in the hands of the airport. “Responsibility for resident parking spaces lies with the road traffic authorities,” says Schmidt. However, the airport itself offers over 5,000 parking spaces for employees and partner companies, which raises the question of whether better communication of the offers is necessary.

A further challenge arises from the increased security measures currently being developed at BER. These became necessary in response to conspicuous climate protests and disruptive actions, which have already led to an increased need for security in recent years. Activists from the “last generation” have tried several times to disrupt flight operations, whereupon the federal police tightened their measures to prevent similar incidents. Among other things, activists broke into the security area of Frankfurt Airport and disrupted flight operations, which shows how vulnerable the airport infrastructure is. A corresponding security concept is based on the onion skin principle, in which multilayered security measures are implemented to comprehensively counteract impending dangers.

Security measures and infrastructure

The importance of efficient security management systems at airports cannot be overemphasized. According to the current projects that are part of FluSs, a variety of protective measures are being researched, ranging from analyzing the threat of hazardous substances to developing a novel airport security IT concept. Work is also underway to better integrate early detection systems to identify potential threats at an early stage. These developments are urgently needed because airports, as places with large crowds of people, also represent a target for disruption that should not be underestimated.

The federal government is also planning to force airport operators to improve their security measures by means of a legal ordinance after a voluntary commitment to improve security measures failed due to resistance from two large airports. This shows that the protection of critical infrastructure is a task for society as a whole that requires everyone involved - from airport operators to authorities.

It remains to be seen how the situation around BER will develop, both in terms of parking options for travelers and in terms of security at these important transport hubs. What is certain, however, is that both travelers and residents can hope for a peaceful summer that balances both travel pleasure and safety.
