Police operation at RAW flea market: Taser against harassing man!

On August 10th, the Sunday flea market on the RAW grounds in Friedrichshain became the scene of a disturbing incident. Loud Berlin Live Witnesses caught the attention of police around 4:40 p.m. when they reported that a man was walking with a knife. However, the emergency services found the 29-year-old with a glass bottle in his hand. Despite the initial confrontation, the man was initially cooperative and put the bottle down, but when the police tried to handcuff him, he unexpectedly resisted.

The incident quickly escalated: the man pushed the officers away and fled towards the flea market. Two police officers were injured in the arms and knees in this attack. Given the situation and the possibility that the 29-year-old might be armed, officers decided to use a Taser. He was ultimately arrested without further resistance and it was confirmed that no knife was found on him. In this context, the man was ultimately transferred to the psychiatric ward of a hospital, like the daily mirror reported.

The situation of the police officers

The incident also sheds light on the challenges facing police in Germany, particularly when dealing with people in mental health crises. Experts point out that there have been 37 fatal operations against people in exceptional psychological situations in Germany since 2019. Many of these incidents could be addressed with better training and preparation of officers...

However, there is a lack of money and staff for such measures, according to a report by daily news is to be read. The parents of Oisín, a tragic case from Hamburg, have even filed a lawsuit before the European Court of Human Rights to obtain an independent review of the case. Such cases highlight the need for police officers to be better trained to act efficiently and safely in crisis situations.

Benjamin Jendro, a spokesman for the police union in Berlin, praised the officers' efforts in the RAW site incident. He emphasized the importance of Taser use in security and underscored the ongoing challenges police face in defusing violent situations without increasing risk to officers and the public.

How will such incidents be handled in the future? The debate about the necessary training and equipment for police forces remains a hot topic that affects not only the police themselves, but also society as a whole. It remains to be seen what measures will be taken to defuse such situations and increase trust between the police and the public.
