Wadephula criticizes Israel: international law broken in the Middle East conflict!

Gaza, Palästinensische Gebiete - On June 5, 2025, Foreign Minister Johann WadePhul made an important appearance in Berlin. During his meeting with his Israeli counterpart Gideon Saar, WadePhul expressed significant criticism of the Israeli approach in Gaza and in the West Bank. These statements fell into a political context in which German Chancellor Friedrich Merz had a first meeting with US President Donald Trump in the White House on the same day. In this context, WADEPHUL calls for more humanitarian aid for the Gaza Strip and refers to applicable international law, which in his opinion is violated by the current acts of Israel.

"We have to draw attention to the catastrophic humanitarian Situation in Gaza," said WadePhul. In particular, he criticized the announcement of the Israeli government to allow 22 further settlements in the West Bank, which he described as a violation of international law. Such theses could possibly set an example for WADEPHUL that he was not afraid to express uncomfortable truths in foreign policy. These critical comments overlaid the public interest on this day, which was primarily directed towards Merz and Trump.

WadePhul's role and approach

WADEPHUL, who is perceived as a "federal outskin", took over the office of Foreign Minister after David McAllister rejected. He has extensive experience in foreign and defense policy since he was elected to the Bundestag in 2009. In his first weeks in office, WadePhul already cited with various statements on defense spending and arms deliveries. His attitude to the arms deliveries to Israel became clear at a press conference when he affirmed the question of whether Germany should continue to deliver weapons to Israel.

In addition, WadePhul met Saar in Israel three weeks ago to consolidate the bilateral relationships and to discuss security issues. Saar emphasized the threats in Berlin that threaten Israel by Iran, Hamas, Huthi-Miliz and Hisbollah.

Humanitarian aid in focus

The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains catastrophic, as the official statement of the Federal Foreign Office shows. Despite a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas since January 20, the basic supply of the civilian population has remained catastrophic, since Israel has imposed an import stop for humanitarian goods since the beginning of March. It is estimated that around 1.9 million people in Gaza are displaced in the inland, which corresponds to about 90 % of the population.

The Federal Government decided to resume cooperation with Unrwa in Gaza and has increased German help for the Palestinian areas by over 300 million euros since October 7, 2023. Under the direction of Deike Potzel, which was appointed as special sentences for humanitarian aid in the Middle East, these means are to be coordinated more effectively.

WADEPHUL's public criticism and the associated demand for an improvement in the humanitarian situation in Gaza illustrate Germany's role in the current geopolitical landscape. These developments could have far -reaching effects on the relationships of Germany to Israel and the Palestinian areas.
