Gun violence in Berlin: Police operations are increasing rapidly!

The situation in Berlin continues to deteriorate: in October 2025, the police were called out seven times due to shots or threats of shooting. Last Thursday, a 37-year-old man was injured in front of a bar in Kreuzberg and taken to hospital, but his condition is stable and his life is not in danger. The perpetrator and the exact background to the crime remain unclear, which only increases the uncertainty among citizens. These and other incidents illustrate the threatening reality facing the population of Berlin.

The Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) has long predicted that Berlin will continue to be one of the cities with the most firearms cases in 2025. With a frequency of 9.9 firearm cases per 100,000 inhabitants, Berlin holds the sad record in Germany. This huge number means that the city is not only seen as a hotspot for such crimes, but also as an example of the significant increase in gun violence in recent years.

The numbers speak for themselves

As of October 24th, 884 acts in which people threatened to use weapons or actually fired shots had already been registered in Berlin. This includes 406 cases of actual shots being fired. In 520 of these cases, at least one suspect was identified, but the price of this violence is high: 179 injured, 31 of them seriously, and one dead are the sad result. What is particularly alarming is that this increase is not isolated to Berlin, but can also be observed throughout the Federal Republic, where firearms offenses have increased by almost 4% compared to the previous year.

  • Berlin: 9,9 Schusswaffenfälle pro 100.000 Einwohner
  • Saarland: 8,8
  • Hamburg: 8,3

The Berlin state chairman of the police union (GdP), Stefan Weh, blames the escalating situation primarily on open turf wars between organized crime groups. Private feuds and competitive situations are increasingly being carried out with armed force. These criminal structures also appear to be better organized than ever before. The BKA recently uncovered a German-Turkish group that was illegally converting blank guns into fully functional weapons. During the investigation, numerous total forgeries as well as silencers and over 500 cartridges were found.

The causes and outlook

The reasons for the increase in firearms offenses are complex: In addition to the increasing availability of illegal weapons and new distribution channels such as the Internet, modern technology, such as 3D printing, also plays a role. The BKA urgently warns against the growing professionalization in this area and emphasizes that new strategies to curb gun crime are urgently needed.

This worrying trend that has Berlin firmly in its grip should make all citizens think. The city not only needs the police and judiciary to take effective action against violence and crime, but also a social discourse about safety and the use of weapons.
