Wonderful quintuplets: Charité Berlin delights with rare birth!

At the end of September there was a very special occasion for celebration in the obstetric department at the Charité in Berlin. One mother gave birth to two girls and three boys - a rare case of quintuplets. Loud Picture The birth took place in the 28th week of pregnancy and was carried out by cesarean section. The first hours after birth required the utmost attention. The newborn quintuplets were immediately taken care of in the neonatal ward, where they will now be cared for until they are strong enough to come home. Despite the early birth, mother and children are doing well; the newborns have even more than doubled their birth weight.

A dedicated team of 25 specialists was available for this extraordinary event. Doctors, midwives and nurses attended the birth around the clock, which is essential for such a multiple birth. The Charité Clinic for Obstetric Medicine is the largest obstetric facility in Germany and delivers more than 5,000 children every year. However, multiple births are rare here; quintuplets only occur naturally in around one in 50 million pregnancies.

Growing challenges

Caring for quintuplets brings with it numerous challenges. “We have a good knack for such complex births,” commented a member of the team, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration. In order to optimally support the newborns, the neonatology team takes control until there is clear stability.

The high number of specialists shows how seriously and lovingly the Charité treats its little patients. The postpartum period is critical and every hour counts to ensure the quintuplets are well cared for. The doctors are optimistic that they will soon be able to go home with their mother.
