Labor market in Barnim and Uckermark: Rising unemployment figures are alarming!

In the Eberswalde agency district, the labor market remained under pressure in August 2025. There are currently 12,738 women and men registered as unemployed, an increase of 389 compared to the previous month. This development is increasing as there are also 488 more unemployed people compared to the same month last year. The unemployment rate in the region increased to 7.9 percent, an increase of 0.2 percentage points compared to July, as Barnim Current reported.

In the Barnim district the unemployment rate is 5.7 percent, while in the Uckermark it has risen to 11.8 percent. These differences are clear, as the unemployment rate rose by 0.1 percentage points in Barnim and by 0.4 percentage points in the Uckermark. The Uckermark therefore continues to struggle with high unemployment Northern Courier is perceived as stagnating and is above eleven percent.

Positive industry developments in Barnim

While the figures in the Uckermark show a bleak outlook, the Barnim is seeing positive growth in some sectors. The health and social services, manufacturing, construction, transport and warehousing sectors are recording positive developments. In addition, there are currently 2,064 vacant positions available at Barnim, which represents an increase of 112 positions. In comparison, only 1,350 jobs are registered in the Uckermark (+17). Employers in the Eberswalde agency district have reported a total of 3,414 vacancies since the beginning of the year.

Particular attention is also paid to the training position situation: in August, 446 young people were looking for a training position, while 343 apprenticeship positions were available. The result is rather mixed, as the upcoming last-minute apprenticeship campaign on September 3rd at the employment agency yard in Eberswalde makes clear. Young people can find out about available places at short notice here.

Youth unemployment as a challenge

The challenges on the job market are particularly reflected in the group of young people. In August, 1,465 unemployed young people under the age of 25 were counted, an increase of 176 compared to the previous month. The unemployment rate for this age group is 10.6 percent. This represents an alarming increase that regional agency director Constanze Hildebrandt is warning about, as there is no clear economic recovery in sight. Employment agency statistics also shows that in April the unemployment rate in the Uckermark was even higher at 11.5 percent.

In summary, it can be seen that despite positive approaches in Barnim, the labor market situation in the Uckermark remains challenging. A rethink and strategies to combat youth unemployment are required to meet the demands of this changing landscape.
