Bernau celebrates the winners of the children's treasure hunt while cycling in the city!
There was a lot of pedaling again this year in Bernau. The children's treasure hunt, which took place as part of the city cycling event, was very popular. From May 1st to 21st, 2025, numerous children and their parents explored the surrounding area on their bicycles. The goal was to find eight hidden puzzle pieces scattered around the city. The commitment was impressive: participants submitted complete treasure maps and had the opportunity to win great prizes.
The winners were announced by Benedikt Kniehl, the sports representative for the city of Bernau. He announced the results of the treasure hunt with great joy. Adam secured first place and was able to look forward to a picnic basket from the tourist information center. A voucher from “Am Rad-Haus” GmbH went to Bianca, who took second place, while Finn, in third place, also received a voucher for the Schatzinsel bookstore. Kniehl expressed his enthusiasm about the lively participation. This activity promotes fun, exercise and environmental awareness and is part of a broader campaign by the Climate Alliance network to strengthen cycling and sustainable mobility. According to Barnim Aktuell, the event was a complete success and brought a lot of joy to young and old.
Motivation for city cycling
But that was just the beginning! In recent years, city cycling has become a popular activity that motivates people to use their bikes. Registration for this year's City Cycling 2025 opened on March 12th and municipalities in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are invited to register. The aim of this annual campaign is to encourage residents to cycle as many kilometers as possible in a period of 21 days. This year the promotional period extends from May 1st to September 30th, 2025.
Another aspect that makes city cycling particularly attractive is financing. The state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania provides a budget for municipalities’ participation fees. This is done on a “first come, first serve” basis. For municipalities in the Northwest Mecklenburg district, participation does not even require a separate registration - here the period from May 24th to June 14th was set to make participation easier.
Looking back at past actions
A look at last year's activities shows how deeply urban cycling is anchored in the region. The cycling days took place in the Mayen-Koblenz district from June 9th to 29th, 2024. With the motto “Pedaling for climate protection” the tires were smoking. Back then, over 781 cyclists took part and together they covered an impressive 168,680 kilometers. In total, around 28 tons of CO₂ were saved. The “Power through Fruit and Vegetables” team from the municipality of Mendig was particularly outstanding, winning the title of front runner with 17,758 km. Such figures underline the positive impact of city cycling on the environment and motivate the increase in such activities.
All in all, the cycling wave keeps rolling! If you're not there yet, you should definitely register and start your next adventure together. Cycling is not only good for the environment, but is also a lot of fun - whether on a children's treasure hunt or in everyday life. So, get on your bike and let’s go!
