Eberswalde celebrates: winning the hospital football title for the third time in a row!
A really big success for the GLG Werner Forßmann Klinikum Eberswalde: On June 28, 2023, the team became German hospital football champions for the third time in a row. With an exciting final that ended 2-1 against the Pfalzklinikum, the team achieved a remarkable “triple” and thus secured their eighth championship title. How Barnim Current reported, the entire tournament took place in Melsungen, where 32 men's and three women's teams fought for the coveted title.
The championship was opened by a top-class star guest, the former national player Jens Nowotny, who added additional value to the event. The Eberswalde team bravely fought their way through the knockout rounds over the course of the tournament and managed to win the 7-meter shooting in the round of 16 and semi-finals. Team leader Dr. Andreas Schwenke expressed his pride in winning the title, which qualified the club for the upcoming EUROSPITAL European Championship, which will take place in Swansea, Wales from September 4th to 7th, 2023.
A long tradition with heart
The German Hospital Football Championship has a long tradition. The idea for this popular event came about 40 years ago and quickly developed into the largest amateur football tournament in Germany. Despite its enormous size, the event has retained its family character, as the focus here is on sporting competition. In the last edition, 26 men's and three women's teams from all over Germany took part, all fighting for the championship trophy. In the women's category, the VAMED rehabilitation clinic in Damp won the title for the fourth time in a row. Male participants can also apply and will be judged not only on their performance but also on the progress they make during the tournament.
Experiences and perspectives
The team from Karlsburg Hospital also took part in the 40th German Hospital Championships and made it to the round of 16. Despite tough competition, including defending champions GLG Werner Forßmann Klinikum, they were eliminated from the tournament against DIAKO Hospital Bremen, who later finished third. The players at the Karlsburg Clinic are made up of doctors, nurses and administrative staff. The clinic management supported the team by providing support with arrival and departure as well as by providing jerseys. Matthias Richter, head of coding and medical controller, expressed his wish to take part again next year and to further strengthen the team spirit.
