Eberswalde launches initiative: Cool places and free water dispensers!
Heat waves are increasing, and not just in the subtropical regions of the world. Eberswalde is now also drawing the right conclusions from climate change and has implemented comprehensive measures to prevent heat. Citizens can receive free water throughout the city or refill their water bottles at various points. These “drinking water dispensers” are part of an initiative that also includes cool places and helps make the summer more bearable.
A total of 19 public and commercial facilities have taken part in this project and offer drinking water. Anyone who would like to find out about the locations of the donors can do so easily via the city of Eberswalde's geoportal, which can be found at here is reachable. The city of Eberswalde would like to thank all participating institutions for their commitment.
Heat prevention in cities
Why is this so important? Climate change is causing hot and dry summers to become more common, particularly in urban areas where asphalt and narrow buildings increase the heat. Appropriate heat prevention is not just a nice plus, but an important necessity to help citizens and especially people in vulnerable situations. Those involved in the “Good Places” initiative have also recognized this; on their website Kühle-orte.de help them find shady parks and drinking fountains.
In recent years, climate conditions have changed dramatically. Studies show that the number of hot days per year is increasing and this causes enormous stress for people and the environment. A cool places map can help to find suitable retreats, and calls for participation in such projects are welcome.
Nationwide initiative
These local efforts are part of a larger federal program to adapt urban and rural areas to climate change. The program aims to promote heat prevention measures and has already supported well-known projects in cities such as Aachen, Erfurt and Hanover. The program, which funds over €476 million, will launch projects to improve blue and green infrastructure to counteract the effects of climate change. Information about these funding projects can be found on the website of the National Urban Development Policy.
With a little initiative and creativity, every city can make a small contribution to maintaining the quality of life of its citizens even in hot times. With its drinking water dispensers, Eberswalde shows that it is often the simplest solutions that make a big difference.
