Burglary in the bistro: Police investigate after failed slot machine theft

On August 28, 2025, there were some high-profile incidents in Germany that once again highlight the worrying developments regarding racism and discrimination. Especially in recent weeks, society has experienced an increase in discriminatory acts and related violence.

On Heegermühler Strasse in Brandenburg, unknown perpetrators gained access to a bistro and damaged the entrance door while the slot machines could not be opened. The criminal police have already started investigations to find out the motives and background. Unfortunately, such attacks are part of a larger problem in society that manifests itself in various forms, as the federal anti-discrimination agency has also observed.

Racism and discrimination in everyday life

Another incident that made the headlines took place in Leipzig. There, a 52-year-old man gave the Hitler salute several times and racially insulted the owner of a bistro. This act caught the attention of the police, who were called to the scene several times. This type of discrimination is not an isolated case and is part of the increasing number of discriminatory attacks in Germany, reports the Anti-Discrimination Agency.

The statistics show a worrying development: in 2024, a peak of around 11,400 requests for advice relating to discrimination were recorded. The characteristics mentioned are particularly common: ethnic origin, racism and anti-Semitism. The increase in incidents and the associated reports reflect growing social polarization. Today, around 21.8% of Germans are considered manifestly xenophobic - an alarming trend.

But it's not just physical attacks that are worrying. Subtle forms of discrimination, such as those looking for accommodation with foreign-sounding names, are also commonplace. It becomes clear here that racism and discrimination are deeply rooted in society and are visible in different ways in different areas of life.

Traffic accidents and other incidents

In addition to the worrying discrimination incidents, traffic accidents also kept the police busy. On the evening of August 27th there was an accident on the B158 between Hirschfeld and the Tiefensee junction in which a driver of a BMW tried to avoid a deer and hit the guardrail. Fortunately, he was uninjured, although his vehicle sustained damage worth around 2,000 euros.

Another incident occurred on Eberswalder Strasse. Here, a 61-year-old cyclist collided with a car and was taken to hospital with minor injuries. However, the driver of the vehicle, an 84-year-old, remained uninjured. These accidents show that, in addition to the social problem, caution is also necessary in everyday life so as not to endanger yourself and others.

Overall, it can be said that both the increase in racist incidents and the traffic problems are of great concern to the city and its citizens. The criminal police are required to shed light on the various problems and find solutions.
