In Schönwalde, the first groundbreaking ceremony took place on July 1, 2025 for the new construction of a three-class elementary school on Bernauer Damm, which is now making rapid progress. How Barnim Current reported, the shell of the school is planned for the end of July 2026, while the overall completion is targeted for the beginning of the 2027/2028 school year. If everything goes according to plan, around 540 students will soon be taught in a modern learning environment.
Particularly noteworthy is the planned completion of the roof of the sports hall by the end of October 2025. The adjacent sports facilities will be usable independently of school operations and should be available to students from October 2025. These include, among other things, a beach volleyball field and a multifunctional field, which enrich leisure activities.
Sustainability in focus
The new building relies on innovative and environmentally friendly technologies: 48 geothermal boreholes are drilled for underfloor heating, while the facade is made of wood. Green roofs and a photovoltaic system should also contribute to the climate-friendly orientation. The project is aiming for silver certification according to the Sustainable Building Rating System (BNB). The total costs for these comprehensive measures amount to around 37 million euros, of which 2.5 million euros are already available from KfW funding.
At the same time, the federal government offers various funding programs to support climate-friendly new construction and renovation of buildings. Particularly noteworthy is the promotion of “climate-friendly new construction,” which offers cheaper loans for sustainable construction projects.
Funding and support
