Violence and chaos: police operations at the weekend in Barnim!
In recent days there have been several incidents in Eberswalde, Barnim, which have put the local police authority on alert. On August 31, 2025, an argument between a 23-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman escalated on a bus. After getting out at Potsdamer Platz, the argument developed into physical violence, with an exterior mirror of a Mercedes being damaged. The police were alerted and discovered that one of those involved, a 25-year-old, was wanted on an arrest warrant. When he was arrested, officers also found narcotics. The investigation into bodily harm, insults and damage to property is in full swing. Fortunately, everyone involved is a German citizen, which makes the whole thing a little easier, reports Barnim Current.
Another incident occurred on Frankfurter Allee, where an 18-year-old Russian driver performed risky driving maneuvers in a Mercedes. When the police became aware of him, the driver fled and eventually lost control of his vehicle, which crashed into a tree. The passenger, a 17-year-old, also tried to escape on foot, but was quickly caught. Neither had a valid driver's license and the license plates did not belong to the vehicle. Fortunately, they were uninjured, but investigations into endangering road traffic and driving without a license are already underway.
Worrying incidents involving alcohol
An incident took place during a Thanksgiving festival in Lunow-Stolzenhagen, where a 34-year-old harassed a young woman. When witnesses intervened, the attacker became violent and injured one of the helpers. The man's state of alcohol (1.68 per mille) is also documented by the police. In this case, investigations have been initiated into assault and sexual harassment as well as resistance to law enforcement officers.
These incidents highlight a larger problem: drunk driving. According to a publication by the Federal Statistical Office, Germany recorded a significant number of alcohol-related traffic accidents between 1995 and 2024. Statista points out that hundreds of thousands of such accidents have been reported in recent years, which has serious consequences for those responsible, not only legally but also under civil law.
Legal consequences
The legal framework is clear: accidents under the influence of alcohol or drugs are considered a criminal offense and can have both criminal and civil consequences. Driving under the influence of alcohol is punished according to Section 316 of the Criminal Code, with consequences starting at 0.5 per mille for inexperienced drivers and 1.1 per mille for experienced drivers. Civil claims can be asserted independently of criminal convictions, which means that injured parties can claim damages from those who caused the accident, even if criminal proceedings are ongoing. It is important to know that in the event of an accident under the influence of alcohol, the burden of proof also changes, which further complicates the legal situation for those involved according to Attorney Kotz.
