Mysterious body discovered in Bernau – police are investigating!
The last few days in Bernau near Berlin were anything but quiet. On September 21, 2025, a Saturday, police officers were called to the city park after witnesses discovered a lifeless person in a ditch on the city wall. A doctor could only confirm that the 60-year-old man was dead. At this point in time, however, there is nothing to indicate third-party influence. The identity of the deceased and the circumstances of his death are still unclear, so a death investigation has been initiated to provide more information. As barnim-aktuell.de reports, the procedure is mainly used to preserve evidence and check whether there is evidence of a homicide.
Another incident that concerned the police in Eberswalde occurred in the evening of the same day. A group of unknown people damaged a book box on Schicklerstrasse. The cladding of the former telephone booth was destroyed. The criminal investigators from the Barnim inspection have started the investigation in order to catch the perpetrator or perpetrators.
Attack with pepper spray
But the night wasn't over yet. Late in the evening of September 20, a 14-year-old boy contacted the police after being attacked with pepper spray by a group of five to seven men. The incident occurred around 10:15 p.m. on Wesendahler Strasse after the attackers attacked his T-shirt, which resembled the colors of a Berlin second division team. Here too, the criminal investigators from the Barnim inspection have started investigating.
In a larger context, it is interesting to note that violent crime in Germany increased by 1.5% last year, with 217,277 cases recorded in 2024, which is the highest level since 2007. Particularly alarming is the increase of 11.3% in the number of suspected children and 3.8% in young people, as documented by [Bundeskritikamt.de].
Back to the death investigation procedure: This procedure is an important legal construct for investigating unclear deaths. Among other things, it enables forensics and post-mortem examinations to determine whether there is evidence of a homicide. It should be noted that the death investigation is not an investigation within the meaning of the Code of Criminal Procedure, but rather follows a different legal consideration. This information is provided by a BGH decision, which confirms that the first public prosecutor's office is responsible for such proceedings, as explained in hrr-strafrecht.de.
It remains to be hoped that the investigations in the cases mentioned will quickly lead to clarification and that the citizens of Bernau near Berlin will soon be able to retreat to their city park in safety and peace.
