Psychological crisis: Taser use in case of aggression in Barnim!

On September 22, 2025, rescue workers in Germany called the police after they encountered aggressive resistance while treating a 46-year-old man in an exceptional psychological situation. In a classic “emergency” situation, the use of a stand-off electrical impulse device, better known as a Taser, was required to calm the man and regain control. The emergency doctor then ordered the man to be taken to a clinic while he was restrained after the device was used.

The Taser, an acronym for “Thomas A. Swift’s Electric Rifle,” was developed in the 1960s and has since become widespread as a non-lethal weapon among police departments. The devices can deliver electrical pulses of up to 50,000 volts, making them capable of immobilizing a person for short periods of time by firing two needle-shaped projectiles into the body. Despite its “non-lethal” status, there are concerns about potential injuries, particularly to people with underlying medical conditions. Amnesty International reports cases in which stun guns have been misused in over 40 countries, including against people who do not commit violence.

Arson on the A11

On the same day at 6:00 p.m., firefighters were called to the A11 after a Mercedes burst into flames between the Joachimsthal and Pfingstberg junctions. Luckily, the driver was able to stop the vehicle on the hard shoulder in time so that he and his passenger were uninjured. However, the car burned out completely and the estimated total damage is 50,000 euros. A technical defect is suspected as a possible cause, and the road remained damaged accordingly.

Quarrel with injury

Also on September 23, 2025, the police received an incident on Potsdamer Allee in Eberswalde in which two men were involved in an argument in an apartment. A 45-year-old man hit his opponent, a 57-year-old, in the head with a television, causing minor injuries. The attacker now has to leave the apartment and faces an investigation.

In Germany, at least ten people have lost their lives in connection with a Taser use by the police since 2021. The debate about the lawful and responsible use of these devices is vociferous, particularly in the context of demonstrations, border controls and prisons. The Berlin police have been using Tasers across the board since May 2024, and there have already been numerous reports of injuries. Policies in 13 of 16 federal states allow the use of Tasers for special situations, although the guidelines for their use are subject to strict requirements.
