Right-wing extremist attacks: Diversity festival in Bad Freienwalde stormed!

On Sunday, a frightening incident in Bad Freienwalde caused a stir: a diversity festival was stormed by masked men who brutally beat the visitors. The police immediately moved out and searched the apartment of a 21-year-old suspect who apparently has connections to the neo-Nazi party “The Third Way”. This group is already known for its repeated mobilization against Christopher Street Day (CSD) events. Next Saturday there is another CSD parade on the program in Eberswalde, not far from Bad Freienwalde, which raises the question of whether similarly aggressive attacks are to be feared there.

This current situation is part of a worrying series of right-wing extremist mobilizations. According to a report by CeMAS, between June and September 2024 there were activities in 27 German cities in which neo-Nazis mobilized against CSD events. As part of these protests, there were several large-scale counter-demonstrations, sometimes with several hundred participants. A particularly extreme case occurred in Bautzen, where around 700 neo-Nazis marched against a CSD festival with around 1,000 participants. These actions not only created a mood against the CSD supporters, but there were also violent attacks that the police often only managed to bring under control with great effort.

A strong imbalance

The Amadeu Antonio Foundation documented a total of 55 attacks on CSDs throughout Germany during the same period. With an increased presence of right-wing extremist counter-protests, for example on August 10th in Bautzen, the impression of a serious threat to those involved in these colorful celebrations increases. The police had to intervene regularly to protect the participants. The development shows that the neo-Nazi scene is going through a change: Young, online-savvy groups are appearing with more violent rhetoric.

An in-depth analysis of the protests by CeMAS shows that two main groups can be identified among the demonstrators: established neo-Nazis and new, mostly young, right-wing extremist movements such as “Deutsche Jugend Voran” and “Jung & Stark”. These groups primarily recruit their followers via social media such as Instagram, WhatsApp and TikTok, which greatly increases their mobilization opportunities. The new generation's focus is on anti-queer rhetoric and intimidation towards their opponents.

Prevention and safety

The organizers of the CSD events are aware of the increasing dangers and are taking appropriate safety precautions. The police are also forced to increase their presence at these events and train their emergency services in order to be able to better deal with the issue of queer hostility. Stronger action against right-wing extremist youth movements on social media platforms is strongly recommended.

The current situation is alarming and raises numerous questions about the safety of participants at future CSD events. The reporting by Radio Three, CeMAS and LSVD provides important insights into this worrying development and offers hope for greater social awareness and protection for marginalized groups in the future.
