Bernau City Park is in bloom: over 3,500 summer flowers for relaxation!

After the lively Hussite festival, the city park in Bernau appears in new splendor again. A comprehensive rejuvenation treatment is underway here on the approximately 58,000 square meter site. The city's green maintenance department is taking matters into its own hands: employees of the city's public works department and a garden service company are ensuring that the park is fit for its visitors again. Garbage, horse manure and straw disappear from the picture and dismantled play equipment finds its place again.

But that's not all. Thanks to the company Kasper – Baum und Garten, visitors can look forward to over 3,500 freshly planted summer flowers. The colorful flowers include marigolds, salvias and ornamental corn. The flowers were specifically chosen to be insect-friendly, so the park not only remains beautiful, but also attracts numerous butterflies and bees.

The influence of the Hussite festival

The Hussite Festival has a tradition in Bernau and recently celebrated its 600th anniversary. Since the first celebration in 1882, the event has developed into an important part of cultural life. The festival, which takes place annually on the 2nd weekend of June, attracts numerous visitors and includes an impressive parade and a fair with rides and culinary delicacies. After the forced break due to the corona pandemic, the festival took place again in 2022 and was very popular.

However, the festival also leaves its mark. The lawn now urgently needs rain to recover from the strain. Unfortunately, regular watering is not always possible due to cost reasons. The department uses organic fertilizer to strengthen the lawn, which is also applied twice a year. Street trees receive up to 120 liters of water per day to mitigate the effects of drought. In times of climate change, this is more important than ever to promote tree root growth.

Ecological aspects in the city park

The city park not only has a recreational function for citizens, but also plays an important role for the city's nature. Birds need places to nest, rest and gather, which is provided by hedges, bushes and trees. To ensure that park visitors remain safe, regular and professional tree inspections are essential. These safety measures are particularly indispensable due to climate change and the associated, more frequent storms.

Cooperation between people and nature is very important in Bernau. The fact that the city park serves as a popular recreational spot for all generations is clear from the current maintenance measures and the ongoing tradition of the Hussite festival. It remains to be seen how the park will develop over time and what floral splendor awaits us next season.
