Beetzsee Center: Millions invested in new specialist stores from 2026!
The modernization of the Beetzsee Center in Brandenburg is making great progress. Current information shows that Kaufland is prepared to invest between five and six million euros in converting the popular shopping facility. This plan was discussed by Kaufland real estate developer René Hoffmann and Mayor Steffen Scheller in a recent meeting. Hoffmann reported a high number of visitors to the center since the Kaufland store opened in June 2023. The Beetzsee Center, which dates back to 1993, will be significantly refreshed through planned renovations by 2025. Stadt-Brandenburg.de further informs that Kaufland will take over the general rental agreement for the center on February 1, 2024.
But what exactly is planned as part of the renovations? The first renovation phase already cost an impressive 11 million euros and has made the first openings possible. The second phase of renovation is now underway and the building application is expected to be submitted in October 2023, which means building permission is expected in February 2026. This phase will divide the former real store into two large specialty stores. Here the entrance next to the scooter furniture will be closed, while the new specialist stores will be easily accessible from outside. The work is scheduled to be completed in August 2026.
What comes after the renovation?
The new specialty stores are scheduled to open in November 2026, which is a good time for the upcoming Christmas shopping season. A total of four new specialist stores with around 4,500 square meters of sales space will be integrated into the center. It is not yet clear who the new tenants will be - there are rumors that the new operators could also include brands that are not represented in the city, such as TK Maxx and Decathlon. Hoffmann plans to release more detailed information about future tenants next month. Meetingpoint-Brandenburg.de emphasizes that the construction work will mainly take place outdoors, so that the ongoing operations of the center will not be disrupted.
It's no secret that retail is under pressure during COVID-19 and other crises. The challenge of ensuring the future viability of city centers and shopping centers remains a central issue. In a comprehensive study, the Federal Institute for Building, Urban and Spatial Research (BBSR) describes how structural changes affect retail and what recommendations for action are necessary to strengthen inner cities. The retail sector is caught between the potential for reuse of shops and the risk of impending vacancies and loss of sales BBSR.de also notes that cooperation between municipalities and private investors is crucial to promote economic stability in cities.
With these developments, Brandenburg is taking big steps to make the Beetzsee Center not only currently relevant, but also future-proof - and that is not just a benefit for the retail sector, but for the entire region.
