Beetzsee Center: Millions of investment for new specialist markets from 2026!

The modernization of the Beetzsee Center in Brandenburg is progressing with great steps. Current information shows that Kaufland is willing to invest between five and six million euros in the conversion of the popular shopping facility. This plan was discussed by René Hoffmann, the real estate developer of Kaufland, and Mayor Steffen Scheller in a recent meeting. Hoffmann reported a high frequency of visitor in the center since the Kaufland market was opened in June 2023. The Betetzsee Center, which originated in 1993, will be decisively refreshed by the planned renovation measures by 2025. Stadt-brandenburg.de further informs that Kaufland will take over the general rental agreement for the center on February 1, 2024.

But what exactly is planned as part of the renovations? The first renovation phase already cost a proud 11 million euros and made it possible for initial openings. Now the second renovation phase is pending and the building application is expected to be submitted in October 2023, whereby the building permit for February 2026 is expected. This phase will divide the former real market into two large specialist markets. Here the entrance next to the scooter furniture is closed, while the new specialist markets will be conveniently accessible from the outside. The work should be completed in August 2026.

What comes after the renovation?

The opening of the new specialist shops is planned for November 2026, which is in good time for the upcoming Christmas business. A total of four new specialist markets with around 4,500 square meters of retail space are integrated in the center. It has not yet been clear who will be the new tenants - there are rumors that brands such as TK Maxx and Decathlon could not be represented in the city. Hoffmann plans to publish more detailed information on future tenants in the coming month. Meetingpoint-Brandenburg.de emphasizes that the construction work will mainly take place outdoors, so that the ongoing operations of the center will not be disrupted.

It is no secret that retail is under pressure in times of Covid-19 and other crises. The challenge of securing the future viability of inner cities and shopping centers remains a central topic. In a comprehensive study, the Federal Institute for Building, Urban and Spatial Research (BBSR) describes how structural changes affect retail and which recommendations for action are necessary to strengthen the city centers. Retail is in the field of tension between the potential for reuse of shops and the risk of impending vacancies and loss of sales Bbsr.de also notes that cooperation between municipalities and private investors is crucial to promote economic stability in cities.

With these developments, Brandenburg takes great steps in order to not only make the Beetzsee Center relevant, but also to make future -proof - and this is not just a profit for retail, but for the whole region.
