Berlin celebrates 30 years of Fête de la Musique: music festival for everyone!
On June 21, 2025, the Fête de la Musique will be celebrated in Berlin and Brandenburg, a unique music festival that celebrates the beginning of summer. This year also marks the 30th anniversary of the event in the German capital, which has become one of the largest music festivals in the world since its inception in 1995. On this special day, every corner of the city becomes a stage - and all for free. rbb24 reports that all twelve Berlin districts are now involved, and this year Pankow is highlighted as a partner district, where over 40 music venues ensure an unforgettable atmosphere.
The roots of the Fête de la Musique lie in France, where it was founded in 1981 by Culture Minister Jack Lang. Back then, the goal was clear: to make music accessible to everyone – free of charge and in the open air. Berlin Magazine highlights that the first performances by amateur and professional musicians in Berlin took place in Paris in 1982, before the city hosted its first fête in 1995. Since then, the event has gained many passionate supporters and represents a cultural enrichment for the entire region.
A feast for all senses
The musical palette ranges from rock and disco to folk, rap, classical and tango. There are over 100 official stages and countless spontaneous performances in the city's streets, parks and cafés. Secret Berlin describes that both professionals and amateurs get their money's worth at the Fête de la Musique. The music will be played at various hotspots such as the Red Town Hall, the Humboldt Forum and many other locations from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., with a selected program starting at 2:00 p.m.
A special highlight in Pankow will be the “Singalong” at the Old Parish Church with the talented singer Jocelyn B. Smith. In addition, the “State Opera for All” on Bebelplatz will shine with the performance of “Romeo et Juliette” by Charles Gounod, with well-known opera stars such as Nino Machaidze and Juan Diego Flórez on stage.
A weekend full of sounds
However, the Fête de la Musique is not only celebrated in Berlin. There are also numerous free events on the program in Brandenburg, including the 60th Havelfest in Brandenburg an der Havel. According to rbb24, around 30 Brandenburg cities take part in this festival, which has established itself as an international phenomenon. Over 1,000 cities around the world celebrate the summer solstice - a sign of the unifying power of music.
Visitors are invited to enjoy the diversity of music and experience the different sounds that sound at the Fête de la Musique. The concept, which is based on fee-free performances, not only promotes musical diversity, but also spontaneity and the joy of celebrating together in the open air.
Be there and let yourself be carried away by the sounds of the Fête de la Musique - an experience that not only marks the start of summer in Berlin and Brandenburg, but also warms people's hearts.
