Berlin under pressure: stone throwing after large demonstration for Gaza causes excitement!
On June 22, 2025, Berlin will transform into a vibrant center for Palestinian solidarity. Over 12,000 people take part in the protest march under the motto “United4Gaza”, which starts at Republic Square near the Reichstag building and heads towards Potsdamer Platz. According to n-tv, the organizers are calling for an immediate end to German support for the Israeli government, more humanitarian aid for the Gaza Strip and the decriminalization of Palestinian voices and symbols.
The protest creates a determined atmosphere, which, however, takes an uncomfortable turn in the evening. As some participants relax in an outdoor area of a snack bar in Kreuzberg, they experience a shocking incident. Suddenly four women are thrown from a building with a paving stone and a wet washcloth. Fortunately, they were narrowly missed and remained uninjured, as the police stated in their statement. Tagesspiegel reports that the state security agency is now investigating the attempted attack, although the identity of the suspected perpetrator is still unknown.
Political tensions and protest culture
The incident is alarming and raises questions: What impact do social tensions have on protest culture? In recent years there has been frequent discussion in Germany about the restrictions on freedom of expression and assembly, especially in the context of voices of solidarity with Palestine. Amnesty International warns of an increasingly narrow discourse landscape and calls for critical voices to be treated respectfully, especially at universities.
It is clear that the public discourse about German and Israeli politics is highly polarized. Blanket bans on symbols and expressions in the Palestinian context do not help clarify the issue. Instead, the space for the necessary narrowing of the debate is becoming smaller and smaller. This means that protests are increasingly criminalized. Amnesty emphasizes that protecting freedom of expression is essential for everyone and that state authorities must enable citizens to discuss and protest in a protected environment.
In a society that juggles a multitude of perspectives and emotions, it is important to seek dialogue. Regardless of political stance, we should all work together for a culture of open debate. Because ultimately we are all part of this discussion about justice, humanity and the protection of the rights of all people.
