Construction site in Mahlenziener Straße: drinking water pipeline and archeology!
After an intensive construction phase, residents and drivers in Brandenburg can look forward to important progress in the renewal of the main drinking water pipes on Mahlenziener Straße. The Construction work start on September 8th, 2025 and are scheduled until September 11th, 2026. During this time the roadway will be completely closed, which poses some logistical challenges.
Under the given circumstances, motorized vehicles will not be able to pass through from the direction of Magdeburger Heerstraße, Kirchmöser and Wusterwitz. However, pedestrians and cyclists can pass through the construction site, which will hopefully provide some relief. In addition, entry and exit for residents is guaranteed, even if short waiting times must be expected.
Archeology influences construction work
The construction site on Mahlenziener Straße presents not only technical but also archaeological challenges. Loud Meeting point Brandenburg archaeological finds are expected, which are accompanied by archaeological preservation. It is believed that valuable remains will be found here that need to be documented and mapped. This inevitably leads to a time and financial burden on the construction work, as around 10% of the costs have already been planned for accompanying archaeological work.
Gunter Haase, Technical Director of BRAWAG, expressed regret at this fact. The archaeological work could further increase already strained costs and potentially impact water prices. “This is a dilemma that we cannot influence,” said Haase.
The first construction phase of the pipeline renewal, which runs between the Mahlenzien waterworks and the entrance to Kirchmöser, was completed two weeks ahead of schedule and was put into operation on July 17th. A total of 4.5 km of new drinking water mains made of polyethylene (PE-HD) were laid here, replacing the old steel pipeline from 1965. The companies involved in the work, including ARGE (Ingenieur-, Tief- und Gleisbau GmbH and TRP Bau GmbH), have done an excellent job, whereas the archaeological support is perceived as stressful.
Diversions and traffic regulations
The work not only affects Mahlenziener Straße, but is also taking place at the same time in Lankenweg, Büdnerweg and insiedlungsstraße. Particular attention should be paid to the parking bans on Büdnerweg. Parking will no longer be possible here and violations will result in a paid towing. Residents of Büdnerweg and the settlement road must expect diversions via Lankenweg during this time.
There will be direct mail with all relevant information for all residents. The city of Brandenburg wants to ensure that all affected citizens are well informed.
This extensive construction work will bring the drinking water system in Brandenburg up to modern standards, even if the circumstances are sometimes a little more complicated. But with plan and organization, the city will overcome the challenges. We ask all citizens to be vigilant and to follow the signage during this time.
