On July 26th and 27th, 2025, the Brandenburg State Archaeological Museum will be transformed into a spectacular setting for history. The event is called Archäotechnica 2025 and is dedicated to the Drusus campaigns up to the famous Battle of Varus, which took place in the second half of AD 9.
At that time, the Roman Empire was constantly trying to conquer and integrate new provinces. The open-air event will not only show historical stands, but also offer numerous demonstrations and hands-on activities. This means visitors can experience up close what everyday life was like in ancient Rome.
The Varus Battle – A turning point in history
The significance of the Battle of Varus, also known as the Battle of Hermann, is immense for German history. The Roman army under the command of Publius Quinctilius Varus faced off against a united Germanic army under Arminius (Hermann). The battle probably took place in the region around Kalkriese near Bramsche and resulted in one of Rome's most devastating defeats. Around an eighth of the Roman troops were wiped out, which temporarily put an end to Roman ambitions to make the areas to the right of the Rhine up to the Elbe a province, as Wikipedia explains ( Wikipedia ).
The conflict had profound consequences. Arminius, once a loyal Roman officer, turned against Rome and united the divided Germanic tribes. Dissatisfaction with Varus' leadership was great; This demanded high tribute payments and put the Germanic tribes under increasing pressure. The unrest and resulting coordination of the tribes under Arminius resulted in the crucial moments of the battle, where the impassable terrain gave the Romans a tactical disadvantage. After three days of bitter fighting, the conflict ended with a catastrophic victory for the Germans and Varus committing suicide on the battlefield ( Planet knowledge ).
An interesting look into the past
During Archäotechnica 2025, visitors will be privy not only to the events and strategies of the Battle of Varus, but also to the everyday lives of the legionnaires and civilians who lived during this time.
