First university dental clinic in Brandenburg: Progress inspires the mayor!

The city of Brandenburg an der Havel is taking an exciting step towards improving dental education in Germany. On Friday, August 8, 2025, a construction site tour of the first university dental clinic in the state of Brandenburg took place. Under the leadership of Mayor Steffen Scheller and project developer Florian Grotmann, the public was given an insight into the progress of the ultra-modern building being built on Bauhofstrasse. The last inspection took place in April 2025, and since then the image of the new building has changed significantly, as stadt-brandenburg.de reports.

The mayor was enthusiastic about the architectural challenges and the well-thought-out design, which will allow a lot of daylight into the rooms, especially thanks to large-scale glazing. “The exterior facade is expected to be closed in late autumn 2025,” explained Grotmann. The interior work is carried out by experienced regional construction partners. It is also interesting that the sanitary installation is carried out independently. In the future, a terrace on the second floor will offer students a wonderful view over Kanalstrasse, the Theater Park and the cathedral.

A new course of study for Brandenburg

The construction of the dental clinic goes hand in hand with the introduction of the Brandenburg model course in dentistry (BMZ), which starts in the summer semester of 2024 at the Brandenburg Medical School (MHB). This recognized university location, which was founded in 2015, aims to improve medical and health care in Brandenburg. The MHB enjoys support from the Brandenburg State Dental Association (LZÄKB) and the State Brandenburg Association of Statutory Health Insurance Dentists (KZVLB). According to mhb-fontane.de, up to 48 students are accepted into the course each year.

A particular focus is on practice-oriented training. Starting in the second semester, students will be able to gain practical experience in medical and dental practices and dental laboratories. The course has a modular structure and does not require a separate physics course, which reduces the risk for students. In addition, no numerus clausus is required, which makes access easier for many. The study location is in Brandenburg an der Havel, where the new clinic is also being built.

Funding and support

The cost of studying is around 132,000 euros. In order to make the training attractive for financially weaker students, targeted financial support from municipalities and districts is sought. The application criteria are geared towards the personality, motivation and practical experience of the applicants and also give prospective students without a high school diploma a chance of a place at university in accordance with the Brandenburg Higher Education Act.

The project aims to secure long-term dental care in Brandenburg by promoting qualified training for dentists. “The improvement of the surrounding area will not only benefit the students, but the entire city,” emphasized Mayor Scheller. Among the planned urban construction projects is the demolition of the tram transformer station for a terrace on the water and the construction of the new canal bridge, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2028.

With these developments, the city of Brandenburg an der Havel is showing a good knack for significantly advancing medical training in the state and at the same time further improving the quality of life in the region.
